Apple granted 60 patents today: Depth mapping for face detection, a new flexible lightning connector dock and more

“The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 60 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “In this particular report we cover two of Apple’s distinct granted patents.”

The first one was first highlighted in our 2013 report titled ‘Take a Peek at a Few Key PrimeSense Patents that Apple Gained,'” Purcher reports. “The patent covers in-depth 2D and 3D mapping in context with face detection which is a precursor to facial recognition. In the second patent we cover a new iPhone dock using a flexible connector system.”

“Apple’s granted patent that originated with PrimeSense, covers a method for face detection, which includes capturing a depth map and an image of a scene,” Purcher reports. “One or more locations in the image are selected to test for presence of human faces. At each selected location, a respective face detection window is defined, having a size that is scaled according to a depth coordinate of the location that is indicated by the depth map. A part of the image that is contained within each face detection window is processed to determine whether the face detection window contains a human face.”
