FOX Business: Apple Watch will be a game changer

“I’m more than a little surprised at all the Apple Watch naysayers,” Steve Tobak writes for FOX Business. “What surprises me is that they never seem to get sick of being completely and consistently wrong. Time after time, they’re so wrong you can set your watch by it.”

“’m seeing story after story about all the things Apple Watch is not, does not have or will not do. It doesn’t solve a problem. It has no killer app. It won’t disrupt the watch industry,” Tobak writes. “When have we heard all that before?”

“Let me explain how this Apple Watch thing will go down. I certainly hope all the negatrons are paying attention,” Tobak writes. “Apple Watch essentially makes your iPhone hands-free and that’s the best case yet for sticking with or joining Apple’s growing ecosystem. It’s actually a brilliant strategy for getting Droid users to iSwitch to iPhone… Remember when Google launched Android Wear last year, sparking a frenzy of stories declaring Google the winner in smartwatches? Well Google and Samsung are about to learn once again that it makes no difference whether they get to market early or late, the best product always wins. By the end of 2015, Apple will once again have a category killer. And without Steve Jobs, may he rest in peace.”

  1. 80% of the time I use my phone I want to hold it. The watch will make that 20% much nicer, but that’s not the killer feature. The killer features will unfold over the next 5 years as Apple devices get more and more interlinked. The Watch is the OS verification that it’s you walking up. Soon every device/computer will respond to you as you walk up. Doors will unlock, garage doors will just open, at concerts you’ll just walk in, at grocery stores you’ll just walk out, your computer will unlock, your car will start.

THAT is what the watch is for. It’s for what it enables.

So sales this year? Whatever. They’ll be fine, I’m sure. But it’s not about that. It’s an end-game maneuver. Essentially the Watch means Apple wins.

    1. Funny how you can get it but all these people who are paid to understand such matters just can’t see beyond what they know or more precisely beyond the ends of their nose. It’s like Jay Morrison has been cloned in Invasion of the body snatchers.

  2. Here we go again with MDN posting more right wing hate from FoxNews. Fox – we all know what that means. Same thing as the Coke Brothers. Well, anything Fox says is a lie, of course, so that means the Watch will be a dismal failure because all the haters at Fox are so stupid. They don’t have intellects like us leftists.

  3. Ultimately, Apple Watch is NOT only about selling Apple Watch. Apple intentionally limits the potential customer base for Apple Watch. Because it’s also about selling more iPhones. This is another example of Apple NOT playing by the same rules; Apple is not even playing the same game as its competition.

Competing smart watches must maximize the potential customer base and support all popular mobile platforms. That results in limited functionality, and fatal problems with compatibility caused by fragmentation. Apple focuses on ONE platform (which it controls completely), and builds DEEP complex integration.

Apple Pay only works with iPhone. Apple intentionally limits the audience for Apple Pay, because it’s not about the service, it’s about selling more iPhones. Completing services are forced to support ALL possible methods of performing mobile transactions.

      1. That’s like saying anyone who wants the newest iPhone already has an iPhone. I can assure you, iPhone has a lot more market share to capture, and things like Apple Watch and Apple Pay are among the differentiators that create NEW Apple customers.

        1. Well, that’s not true, since Apple Watch works with iPhone 5, which was the new iPhone more than 2 years ago. Compatible with iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, and 6 Plus. That’s most of the iPhones in active use.

  4. Ok, in the last year I have seen precisely 1 person with a smart watch. So now, we are to believe that everyone who has an iPhone will automatically get the watch? That’s a pipe dream. Ok, open for flames, begin.
