Piper Jaffray’s Munster: More powerful Apple TV set-top box at the core of Apple’s fall 2015 products

“Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who has long clamored for an Apple television set, said on Thursday that he believes a revamped Apple TV set-top box could prove to be a centerpiece for the company’s fall 2015 product lineup,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Munster continues to believe that a full-fledged Apple television set is in the works — a point he made clear once again in his latest note to investors,” Hughes reports. “But in the interim, he sees a more powerful Apple TV set-top box launching this year as a step toward a potential connected HDTV.’

“For the next-generation Apple TV, Munster predicts that updated hardware and software will integrate content, gaming and HomeKit support,” Hughes reports. “Munster also cited recent reports claiming that Apple has been in talks with content providers to develop its own content service akin to Sling TV.”

    1. Clearly one of three things will happen eventually:

      1. Munster retires
      2. Apple goes out of business
      3. Apple finally makes a TV set and Munster will have “predicted” it.

      1. So, your theory is that Apple’s REAL “hobby” is jerking around Gene Munster, like a dancing marionette, eliciting belly laughs in the board room?

Makes as much sense as most of the theories peddled by the analysts.

        1. Sorry, I thought your joke was funny and it made me visualise an Apple boardroom puppet show starring Uncle Gene.. if Apple really WERE dekeing him, that would make about as much sense as some analysts’ explanations..

    1. While I think you’re right, I do remember the incessant predictions of a “Verizon iPhone”, which went on for at least a year, maybe two or longer, until we were so sick it, since it seemed obvious BS. And then waddyaknow? iPhone on Verizon.

You’re probably right, but each time I’ve said “no way is Apple doing this”, I’ve been wrong.

  1. NO TV is coming Gene……………………GTFO with the television!!

AppleTV set top box —–YES, will specific content……………….

    NO MONEY in television screens………

    Money is in content……….

    ENough Gene, time to STFU!!

  2. If the Mac or iPad is the TV screen, then Apple TV is the key.

If the Apple TV is built into the screen , ….

The 5 stages of content delivery:

    1. The content owner
    2. distribution company (iTunes Store)
    3. The ISP
    4. the Desktop device (Apple TV)
    5. The screen (TV or iDevice)

Apple has 2 or 3 of the 5, in theory.

  3. With music everyone used CD’s and CD’s were the same everywhere, and in terms of broadcast people use radio which again is basically universal. These are relatively easy to replace with downloads and streaming.

DVD’s are basically replaceable with downloads, but TV is much more complicated. Every country uses different delivery methods, has a myriad of providers, people don’t just have one device like they do for music, and that’s before you even factor in games systems which plug into a TV. I just think there are far too many ways of getting content and I don’t think internet speeds are universally fast enough for the majority of people to rely upon them for their entire household’s TV content. As such, I don’t think there is an easy one box solution that would make an Apple TV worthwhile. I’m more surprised that TV’s haven’t just become monitors with speakers with all signals provided by some external box (with other things plugged into it).

Currently I have my satellite box, blu-ray player, Apple TV, and other devices plugged into my amplifier which gives me surround sound when I want it, but also routes whatever signal I want to my tv – effectively acting as a switch and making my tv a glorified monitor. Other than the power and volume (all of which are done from the amp remote) I use no functions on my actual tv at all.

Considering that houses often have multiple TV’s, not all of which are 60″ behemoths, I can’t see Apple wanting to make a huge range of all different sizes.

  4. When pig fly Gene both you and me can take an aerial tour of Cupertino the take a fly by on see how they are doing on their new campus. They are NOT making a TV. And they are NOT going to upgrade the ATV. The ATV got more respect when it was a “hobby” than a product. That’s what you get for only being interested in content and not the device.
