“Samsung has dismissed the threat to its smartwatch range from the Apple Watch, and has ramped up investment in the category, the head of its European operations told CNBC,” Arjun Kharpal reports for CNBC.
“Apple said its long-awaited smartwatch would be released in April, but YH Eom, Samsung’s European president, said the company was not worried about the competition from its U.S. rival,” Kharpal reports. “‘We don’t have time to worry about… our competition. We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want,’ Eom told CNBC in a phone interview from the company’s European stakeholder event in Monaco.”
“The South Korean electronics giant has already released six smartwatches, including the 3G-capable Gear S. But Eom said the company had no plans to take its foot off the gas pedal,” Kharpal reports. “‘The wearable market has a huge potential. So we are making heavy investment in R&D… I would say a significant portion of our investment is around wearables and we will be ready in time to deal with the market trend,’ he said.”

MacDailyNews Take: The difference between Samsung and Apple in a nutshell:
We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want… We will be ready in time to deal with the market trend. – YH Eom, Samsung
Our whole role in life is to give you something you didn’t know you wanted. And then once you get it, you can’t imagine your life without it. And you can count on Apple doing that. – Tim Cook, Apple
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Dan K.” for the heads up.]
Apple watch does not worry us. We can copy anything.
Apple Watch doesn’t worry us. We never expected ours to sell well anyway.
Apple Watch doesn’t worry us. We will make all the internal parts anyway.
“We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want” and for Apple to show us when they release Apple Watch.
I would imagine it’s much like how a stubbed toe wouldn’t worry you if your leg was already falling off.
Actually more like someone else stubbing their toe would bother you.. I don’t see Samsung or Apple smartwatches actually competing for the same group of people anyway.. Each smartwatch as far as I can see would only be of interest to people that already have or intend to purchase the compatible smartphone. Those groups do not intersect (unless you consider persons owning both Android/Tizen and iOS smartphones).
I was alluding more to the fact that they’ve got bigger problems. Watches aren’t a big part of their business. Phones are and are being creamed. If that goes tits up, then Watches are almost an irrelevance.
ShameSung is fearlessly copying the iPhone6 and eventually probably the Apple Watch too because they are being protected by the U.S. courts so what’s to worry….
Judge Lucy Koh will protect them.
Actually, in truth, consumers are protecting Apple by buying the highest quality, highest priced product because it offers the most and lasts the longest.
A couple 3GS iPhones still in use in the family. No problem.
Every iPhone we have ever bought in our family is still in use among our friends somewhere. Hand-me-downs are great!
“We will be ready in time to deal with the market trend.” – YH Eom, Samsung
I believe something was lost in the translation from Korean. Here’s the correct version:
“We will be ready in time to copy whatever Apple does.” – YH Eom, Samsung
they’re worried
Methinks the queen doth protest o’ermuch
Watch out samsung, your time will come.
Of course it doesn’t. Apple Watch will just be another thing that they can copy.
‘We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want…’
Answer: the consumer trend is toward Apple products, and what they want is Apple products.
Precisely!
“We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want,”
“We will be ready in time to deal with the market trend.”
Two years ago, one of their (Samsung’s) Euro leaders (in England, IIRC) said something to this effect: We watch the market and develop (meaning ‘copy’) accordingly.”
They are copiers of what sells. It is what they do! It is their nature. It is their DNA.
At the point that they reach that understanding, they will begin to worry.
“We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want”
If I asked what the consumer wanted, I would have gotten the answer: “Faster horses.” Apple does not focus on what the customer wants but instead on what the customer needs.
Consumer trend ?
Or technical feasibility and design insights ?
Samsung whistling past the cemetery.
Head to where the puck is going.:)
Samsung “Apple Watch doesn’t worry us”. So that means it does or they wouldn’t have to say anything. Apple will sell more of its watches in one weekend then Samsung has in its two years of sales.
Never were more disingenuous words from idea-less thieves spoken. Back to the Apple well for them to copy from. It can’t be more clear to the world that Samsung will never have the ability to develop anything on their own that lives up to that old Henry Ford saying. They have no clue.
And neither do you. Happy to jumps on any bandwagon with no knowledge of what you talking about.
Yes you’re right. AllI have is empirical evidence and history of Samsung nefarious market methods and criminal copying FAIL and Apple R&D innovating SUCCEED (proved time and time again) while all you have is your running off at the mouth doofusness. The bandwagon you’re on is the Delusion Express.
“and has ramped up investment in the category”
Reporter – You are going to spend more in R&D?
Samsung – Heavens no, we are ramping up our marketing budget.
“We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is”
Translation – We are spending time to see where Apple is going . . . or has been.
Great MDN take, stole my thunder. Will only add when people go on that they as stockholders own the company, decide who is on the board and thus what direction the company takes JUST READ THAT TAKE WILL YOU. And do try to remember it because your short sightedness is the only thing that threatens Apples success. If you don’t like their methods then don’t own the bloody stock.
I know my view is going to be very unpopular here but I personally do not see the need for a smart watch – any smart watch. More so if I need to carry my phone (iPhone 6 Plus) with me in order to make full use of the smart watch’s functionality. I may feel differently once the Apple Watch is released and 3rd party apps are released.
MDN – For your consideration – you should update your poll to include an option for those who have no plan to purchase a smart watch. For example, “Do you plan to purchase an Apple Watch?”.
Option 1, No,
Option 2, Yes – Sports Edition 42 MM,
Option 3, Yes – Sports Edition 38 MM,
Option 4, Etc.
The article makes mention of using a smart watch to control all of the connected appliances in one’s household. Maybe it is just me but I really do not want my refrigerator, washer, dryer, microwave, etc. connected to the internet. Coming soon – “Great, my refrigerator got hacked.”
This approach to a Smart Home reminds me of a quote from Star Trek VI – The Undiscovered Country:
“Let us redefine progress to mean that just because we can do a thing, it does not necessarily mean we must do that thing.”
Bottom line – The Apple Watch may sell like hotcakes but right now I am just not excited by it. To each their own though. Regards.
Didn’t Ballmer as well as Palm say somewhat the same thing in 2007 about the iPhone, now look how that is going!
We are spending time to understand where the consumer trend is and what they want… We will be ready in time to deal with the market trend. – YH Eom, Samsung
Translation – if you throw enough shit at a wall, some of it will stick.
