Apple did not ask for incentives for new $2 billion data center in Mesa, Arizona

“Apple Inc. won’t be getting money from a state business recruitment fund for its new planned $2 billion data center in Mesa,” Mike Sunnucks reports for The Phoenix Business Journal.

“Mesa Mayor John Giles and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey spokesman Daniel Scarpinato said the technology titan would not be getting any funds from a $25 million Arizona Competes Fund created by former Gov. Jan Brewer,” Sunnucks reports. “Brewer and the Arizona Commerce Authority promised Apple $10 million when for its original plans for a former First Solar building it bought in the East Valley. But Apple’s plans for a sapphire glass plant at the site fell apart when supplier GT Advanced Technologies filed for bankruptcy. The 700 jobs promised by that project were nixed.”

“Apple won’t be getting the $10 million because of the GT Advanced bankruptcy. And, it is not asking for a new incentives for the 150-worker data center. ‘This is a clean deal,’ Giles said. The Mesa mayor said Apple did not ask for the incentive when talking to state and local officials about the data center,” Sunnucks reports. “The Apple data center could still benefit from a tax break on power usage passed last year after the GT Advanced plans were announced.”

This genius of the second half of the American twentieth century, riddled with cancer, wants to build a citadel to his vision of technological innovation in their stupid little town and these dickheads cheer for free wifi. I would give anything to hear what Jobs told his wife about his day that evening.

      This is as clear-cut example of the evil of collectivism vs the creativity of individualism since JFK’s Berlin Wall speech.

      1. I admire your unvarnished idealism, botvinnik. I wonder, was it me who inspired you to re-read the Oz books, or do you already own a gilded set of them? The fourteenth and final book by L. Frank Baum is devoted to Glinda: as sympathetic, compelling, and centred a character as can be found in all of Oz .. and one is tempted to add, in all the world.

        1. I don’t consider it idealism, noble goals to strive for perhaps…anyway, L. Frank Baum could not get his masterpiece published for years and years..his mother-in-law, who lived with his wife and him, published it on her own for him. (It is my personal theory that Glinda was based on her kindness). The rest is an American literary phenomenon…BUT! Even more interesting, at least to me, Baum took that capital from his Oz books and established a film studio in California. He hired French artisans to hand-color each frame of film, he could not imagine his story in black and white…of course, the studio went broke, due to exorbitant labor costs.. THEN, the studio was purchased by Mack Sennett of Keystone Cops fame and became quite wealthy.

        2. Oh I would dearly love to see those French hand painted cells or whatever they called them back then. I wonder what became of them, and if they were faithful to the original illustrations of John R. Neill? As a girl I loved to trace the drawings of the Sawhorse and Jack Pumpkinhead.

        4. PS – “was it me who inspired you to re-read the Oz books.” I shall make a public confession to you..as much as your most sincere and thoughtful words inspire me, my affection for Baum was sparked by a woman long before the good day your freckled-face was born.
          It is my most heartfelt recollection of my youth, when I asked my mother, “You must tire of my constant questions, you must tire of me.”

          She replied, “It is an honor to be your mother.”

In his 1964 American Quarterly article, “The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism”, Henry Littlefield posited that the book contained an allegory of the late 19th-century bimetallism debate regarding monetary policy. At the beginning of the novel, Dorothy is swept from her farm to Oz by a cyclone, which was frequently compared to the Free Silver movement in Baum’s time. The Yellow Brick Road represents the gold standard and the Silver Shoes which enable Dorothy to travel more comfortably symbolizes the Populist Party’s desire to construct a bimetallic standard of both gold and silver in place of the gold standard. She learns that to return home, she must reach the Emerald City, Oz’s political center, to speak to the Wizard, representing the President of the United States. While journeying to the Emerald City, she encounters a scarecrow, who represents a farmer; a woodman made of tin, who represents a worker dehumanized by industrialization; and a cowardly lion, who represents William Jennings Bryan, a prominent leader of the Silverite movement. The villains of the story, the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wicked Witch of the East, represent the wealthy railroad and oil barons of the American West and the financial and banking interests of the eastern U.S. respectively. Both these groups opposed Populist efforts to move the U.S. to a bimetallic monetary standard since this would have devalued the dollar and made investments less valuable. Workers and poor farmers supported the move away from the gold standard as this would have lessened their crushing debt burdens. The Populist party sought to build a coalition of southern and midwestern tenant farmers and northern industrial workers. These groups are represented in the book by the Good Witches of the North and South. “Oz” is the abbreviated form of ounce, a standard measure of gold.

          Littlefield’s thesis achieved some support, but has been strenuously attacked by others.

However, I do believe that a good deal of traditional children’s lore derives from trenchant issues of the day, distilled through a lens of purity and innocence, and descended through generations; artifacts of past public disgrace. London Bridge is falling down! Never mind Jack and Jill; they might well be replaced, centuries hence, by sly jumprope rhymes about Bill and Hillary.

        7. What is also interesting is that the edited version makes it seem like Jobs acquiesced to free wifi provided by apple. I can find no information that indicates this at all. I think this is why bot is thrashing out – his video is doctored so much he was duped as well. Not that it takes much for bot to thrash out.
