“Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. recently approached BlackBerry Ltd. about buying the company for as much as $7.5 billion, looking to gain access to its patent portfolio, according to a person familiar with the matter and documents seen by Reuters,” Jennifer Ablan and Liana B. Baker report for Reuters.
“South Korea’s Samsung proposed an initial price range of $13.35 to $15.49 per share, which represents a premium of 38 percent to 60 percent over BlackBerry’s current trading price, the source said,” Ablan and Baker report. “Executives from the two companies, which are working with advisers, met last week to discuss a potential transaction, the source said, asking not to be identified because the conversations are private.”
Ablan and Baker report, “The offer price would imply an enterprise value of $6 billion to $7.5 billion for BlackBerry, assuming conversion of $1.25 billion of convertible debt, according to the documents.”

> looking to gain access to its patent portfolio
Since when does Samsung actually care about “patents”? 😉
Maybe Apple can borrow a few of the really, really good ones (if any). What’s Samsung going to do… sue for infringement?!?
I think Apple has already figured out how to work around any BB patents. Let Samsung have it. They deserve each other. When it comes to patent portfolios, nobody can match Apple’s.
When they want to use them to sue Apple
Last ditch effort to gain IP to use as trading fodder with Apple so Samsung can legally use some Apple patented features?
Talk about dinosaurs mating.
Actually, a better analogy would be dinosaurs mating with roadkill.
That would be like Ballmer mating with Mike Dell.
With the net effect equal to or less than zero.
Walking Dead
“Alert! Alert! This is Captain Edward John Smith requesting assistance! We’re sinking and need old, rusty boat anchors to be loaded aboard immediately! Any! Any at all in the vicinity, please respond!”

“This is the end, beautiful friend. This is the end, my only friend, the end…”
The Doors
I heard the Doors play that song in San Diego in 1968. Too bad Jim liked his drugs.
Yeah, and too bad his father was instrumental in creating the Tonkin Gulf false flag attack that helped launch the Vietnam War.
Like tying two rock together and expecting them to float.
Well, there’s pumice. That floats. And it stinks.

The internet, where rumors last mere hours
Reminder: Samsung’s recent attempt at phone security was such a total FAIL that they turned to Blackberry for THEIR phone security system. I’m going to guess that is when the ‘buy me, BUY ME!’ chitchat began.

A: Won.
Q: How many copy cats does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: None. Just douse the copy cats with gasoline, strike a match and you’ll have all the light you need!
This may have more to do with Samsung distancing itself from google’s Andriod OS.
Samsung has launched its TizenOS phone in India this week. They appear committed to using their home-brew OS in their TVs, too.
Building/buying a patent portfolio as they begin a migration from Android makes sense.
This would be tacit acknowledgment from Blackberry it’s future is one of certain doom if true ands to get out while any value is left.
