Apple Watch ‘Companion’ app for iPhone revealed w/ new Watch features, monograms

“Yesterday, we reported that the latest iOS 8.2 beta reveals that an Apple Watch application for the iPhone is in the works,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“Now, we have some more details. Within Apple, the application is currently called the Apple Watch ‘Companion’ app for iPhone,” Gurman reports. “This application manages settings for Apple Watch applications, as well as settings for iPhone/Watch interactivity.”

“The Companion app’s settings reveal some novel new functions that are coming to the Apple Watch,” Gurman reports. “Within the Companion app, the About Screen for the Apple Watch will show storage capacity, the number of songs stored on the device, the number of photos stored on the device, the number of apps on the Watch, and device serial number, Bluetooth, and WiFi details. This confirms that the Watch will have usable storage space. Apple has previously said that users can store music on the device itself, though photos were not explicitly mentioned in much detail aside from saying favorited photos will appear.”

  1. Just as at one time your iPod, iPhone and iPad were dependent upon an outside device (computer with iTunes) to be properly managed, so too will the Apple Watch for several years.

At some point down the road when battery technology advances and the components continue to shrink and sip less power, this need for tethering will become merely an option as it is today instead.

I believe I’ll be a day 1 buyer of one of these circa $500, partly because that just what I do with new Apple launches and also because I’m intrigued at how this might change my life for the better as other devices I do not want to live without half. But it’ll be fun to lack back on the first gen design someday and snicker at it because as beautiful and tiny as it is now it’ll be hard to believe one day we every wore something that thick on our wrists!

Although it’s the rev A products that end up in the museums, are overbuilt and under powered brick sh*thouses that boot up until the end of time… I’m going to have to settle for the gray a-loo-minium version this go round, and I’m going to love it! Can’t hardly wait! Hey Apple… it’s early 2015 already, where’s my watch…
