“Apple has shared its latest App Store Distribution Data on iOS 8 adoption to report that some version of its current mobile operating system is installed on 68% of iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac.
“Apple tracks the rate of iOS 8 adoption based on devices accessing the App Store with the current data being captured on January 5th, 2015,” Hall reports. “For comparison, analytics company Mixpanel reports iOS 8 adoption just above Apple’s own data at roughly 70% in its latest numbers.”

MacDailyNews Take: iOS 8 adoption is creeping up every slowly (in comparison to iOS 7, at least). Google would die in a fit of joy for Fragmandroid numbers a fifth as good as these.

Seems to be a little slow on the uptake. I wonder if the combination of the hatred people had for the changes in the look of the UI of iOS 7 and the horrible bugginess experienced during the first half year frightened them away from future updates.
Nah, it’s just because upgrading a small, 16 GB device is a PITA. A lot of these users have never plugged their phone into a computer even once, and now learn that they don’t have enough free space on their phone to do an over-the-air update. So they either have to install iTunes on their computer or find a friend with an install that can help them.

That IS a bigger problem than I first realized. Apple doesn’t seem to go out of its way to inform people that iOS devices aren’t standalone devices and need to be tethered occasionally, that is until tech support is called. Then again, the bug list of iOS 7 was quite impressive prior to 7.1.1. It had me nervous about installing iOS 8.
And powers it poorly. I love the ecosystem, but iOS 8 feels like a beta release with all its bugs and issues. I have a brand new iPhone 6 Plus and i have constant issues with apps, keyboard, messaging, unresponsive touchscreen. I might just write it off as a faulty phone, if these same issues didn’t replicate themselves throughout every iDevice I have upgraded/purchased to iOS 8. (iPad 3, iPhone 5, iPhone 6 Plus, 2 iPhone 6’s, latest version of the iPod, and iPad mini 2.) I have two original iPad minis still with the iOS 7 and i have none of these issues. Love the devices but the software is really hurting.

Another reason for numerical slowness is that iOS 6 devices are holding up well.
8 or 16 gb devices with a lot of pictures or music are unable to upgrade due to insufficient space.
I agree. The slower uptake is likely due to the problem of iCloud backup users not having enough free storage on their iPhones to download the OS, decompress it, and install it. Once burned, they delayed upgrading to iOS 8.
Those who use iTunes to perform their backups (as I do) and system upgrades had no issues, since my Mac has plenty of memory (RAM) and storage (SSD) to take care of all the upgrade housekeeping in the background.
I suspect the ultimate benefits of the upgrade will encourage most to either delete enough easily replaceable stuff so the upgrade can proceed wirelessly, or just take the time to plug their iPhone into iTunes on their desktop computer.
You’d be surprised how many people refuse to plug the phone into a computer for whatever reason.
