“Iowa is looking to create the nation’s first smartphone driver’s license with an app that can co-exist with the traditional plastic card,” Jeff Elder reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“The director of the state’s Department of Transportation gave Gov. Terry Branstad an update on the project Monday. Andrea Henry, a spokeswoman for the DOT, said the app is in currently development for iOS and Android phones and is expected to be free,” Elder reports. “Despite news reports about a 2015 release, the department isn’t sure on timing in part because of ‘concerns about privacy’ and security, she said.”
MacDailyNews Take: If they’re making an Android version, they’re right to be concerned.
“The new app will be another convenience for drivers in the same way that Department of Motor Vehicle websites have become, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators said,” Elder reports. “The trade association, which represents motor-vehicle officials, said “Iowa’s innovative pilot will explore new opportunities,” but also noted the need for security.”

So when a LEO demands your DL you have to show it which means unlocking your phone (if locked). Sounds like a good partial work around of Apple Security.
Yup, especially for those folks that opt in.
Not necessarily. It’s at least possible for it to show on the lock screen, if Apple rules will allow it, like the Medical ID.
A secure and multinational ID framework tied to Touch ID is be something Apple should be working on. It will make little to no money by itself but would go a long way to Apple’s goal of replacing my wallet, and sell more iPhones.
I already have my credit cards, photos, and show tickets in my iPhone.
You’re right! Better security, better authentication that you are who you say you are.
Who do you say you are, Sparkles?
A very smart person because he agrees with me. 😉
iPhone 666 🙂
No, that’s the Apple I.
Get your Apple devices straight. 😉
They should make this, and insurance apps accessible from the lock screen. That way you can hand your device to an officer, and he can see both of those, but not access the rest of your info without the password.
I want – but should be recognized in all 50 states and retail locations as a legit form of ID before we toss out our physical DLs. Will be many years before it’s widely accepted.
I was also thinking about people who live in eastern Iowa that may travel to Illinois frequently … will the Illinois State PD recognize Iowa’s app as proof of ID?
If it is recognized in Iowa, then it is automatically recognized in all 50 states.
Wonder who pays for a new screen when the officer dropped your phone accidentally?

Put a bumper on it.
Yes!!! Finally
This will be so convenient. When you get pulled over for using your phone while driving, it’s right there.
“Due to historic securities issues the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles will NOT be issuing an Android version of this app.” Is a quote we would all love to read.
Wow! Braindead is doing something good for a change!
I grew up in Iowa and escaped 10 years ago so I write from experience.
