Losing Apple’s mobile Safari default search could hurt Google revenue big time

“Google has potentially $9.4 billion in gross revenue at risk if it’s unable to renew a contract with Apple for mobile Safari toolbar searches, says a Citigroup report, which says potential losses depend on how many Apple customers stick with Google’s search engine,” Reinhardt Krause reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

“Google stock had fallen 3.5% as of Wednesday’s close since The Information reported on Nov. 24 that Google’s default search agreement with Apple might be in peril,” Krause reports. “That report said the Apple-Google deal is set to expire in 2015, possibly as soon as January. Apple’s iPhone 6 sales have been stronger than projected, increasing the potential impact.”

“Citigroup analyst Mark May estimates that 60% of Google’s 2014 mobile search revenue will come from its default search deal with Apple,” Krause reports. “Apple recently switched its mobile search provider for voice app Siri from Google to Microsoft’s Bing.”

MacDailyNews Take:

Google’s going to rue the day they got greedy by deciding to try to work against Apple instead of with them.MacDailyNews, March 9, 2010

    1. What? I am sure they do not need Apple’s customers that are willing to spend their money for things they want. They have all those Android, Chrome, … people that never had the money and credit cards to buy the finer things in life.

The sooner Apple tears off that parasite the better!!!

  1. For reference Yahoo captured 20% (in just 24 hours!) of Firefox traffic from Google in the latest update that replaced Google as the default US search engine.

Also worth keeping in mind that much of Google’s search accuracy comes from crowdsourcing the results from their millions of users – in simple terms, if more users pick a particular link which is not the first listed in response to a given query, then it’s probably better and worth promoting to a upper position. Google also has the focus of the web industry in optimising websites to please them as best as possible.

If they start losing users and SEOs start looking elsewhere Google “renowed” accuracy will fall off a cliff, just like their accuracy already sucks for countries/content like South Korea where they’re not a market leader.

    1. I contend Google Search is not as accurate as it once was. I am regularly trying other search sites these days.

Also, I get the feeling Google is doing its infamous Beta testing on web page display. The fact is: not everybody is using Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome at default settings. No experienced user would do so.

A Motley Fool article today says that Google’s moat is very wide. I could not disagree more. Its already crumbling.

  2. GOOG down 3.5%? From that we assume it is because of Apple threat. Gosh AAPL is down 5% in same time period. And from that we assume what? Maybe these are both due to the market and oil.

      1. a few things i’d like DDG to implement, and it would be perfect.

On mac anyway it only shows me a handful of images when I am trying to find something. Bing/Google both have “image” tabs that I can search 1000’s of images.
I click the Image tab on DDG.. 31 results. (Granted something I could use was in there, but still… 1000 vs 31?…)

        1. I know what you mean. But a year ago I was demurely hounding the developer of DDG to implement image searches within DDG instead of defaulting to Gaggle. He did! What we have now is a step forward. With polite nagging and donations I expect the improvements will continue.

        2. There are other little things here and there i’d like to see changed. but I’d say most of them I can’t think of off the top of my head, I always think about it when i’m searching.

Need to write that stuff down. Old age ruins the mind.

  3. I once imagined that Google made Apple pay a pretty penny for access to Google Search. Now it seems the tables are turned. Bet Google are offering Apple quite a lot for pole position.

  4. Most the iPhone/iPad owners I know will continue to use Google for both search and for maps. The others are just not as good as Google’s products. I wish it was not so, but it is. Apple makes the best hardware in the world, but a lot of Google’s software is just the best. So I do not see this hurting GOOG at all. Indeed it may bite Apple, like the maps fiasco. And just look at today….AAPL up 0.5% GOOG up 1.0%.

  5. I know I’m gonna get the heat for this comment but it is sad that I have to use google search because Yahoo is getting more and more lays every day, too complicate and poor results.
Bing is getting better but still very far from compete with google.
Apple should support one of them in order to face Google in the search field.

  6. A fun thought experiment:

    1. Apple doesn’t renew with Google
    2. Google market cap decreases to $126.4 billion
    3. Apple buys Google
    4. Apple shuts down Android
    5. Apple sells 2 billion iDevices in 2018
