United Airlines woos fliers to Newark with Apple iPads everywhere

“For travelers awaiting some of the tardiest departures in the U.S., United Airlines is offering a diversion via shopping and dining orders from an iPad,” Jennifer Kaplan reports for Bloomberg.

“New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport, which consistently scores toward the bottom of U.S. on-time rankings, is getting a $120 million upgrade in United’s main terminal,” Kaplan reports. “The carrier is rolling out Apple Inc.’s signature tablets and other flourishes, following similar facelifts at New York’s airports, as it competes for loyal business fliers.”

“By 2015, every restaurant and gate seat in United’s Terminal C will have an iPad, letting travelers get flight updates, browse the web, buy food and make retail purchases with a 15-minute delivery guarantee,” Kaplan reports. “As Louisiana native Paul Guinn awaited his connecting flight from Newark to Boston last month for a visit with his brother, he recalled seeing iPads for fliers’ use at the Munich airport. ‘It was amazing,’ Guinn said. ‘It was so cool.'”

  1. Sure those are not Scurface tablets? They sure look mounted onto a surface to me! Maybe I ought to go wash my eyes having gone to sleep as Crabapple and woken to find that I have slept the sleep of Rip Van Winkle!!! 🙂

  2. When there’s iPads down in baggage claim that allow me to send a tweet to #UNITED that I’ve been waiting too damn long for my baggage … then maybe I’ll say something positive.

And that 30+ minute wait is despite having #PRIORITY tags on my bags as a supposedly “Elite” customer. United’s EWR ground crew failed to perform again this past Sunday on the flight back from Frankfurt. And it wasn’t the first time this quarter…

    1. There’s no difference between using iPads and using the touch-based check-in terminals that have been in place for years. Either way, just carry Purell if you are really nervous about germs…
