“Verizon and AT&T announced today that they are working together to allow Voice over LTE calls between their customers,” Jordan Kahn reports for 9to5Mac. “The carriers, which both previously announced the roll out of VoLTE technology earlier this year, said they expect VoLTE interoperability between their customers to arrive next year.”
“Verizon announced its rollout of VoLTE technology earlier this summer leading up to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch in September, while AT&T (along with T-Mobile) also announced support for VoLTE and started rolling out the feature to customers,” Kahn reports. “Before Verizon and AT&T’s rollout of VoLTE interoperability, the feature only works when making a call to a VoLTE capable device on the same network.”

Too Little Too Late.
And don’t forget about wi-fi calling. Since the networks connections inside homes sometimes sucks (as it does in mine), having the ability to operate over wi-fi would be huge.

Is wifi calling automatic when you are conncted to a wifi network? Or do you have to change the settings everytime you use it?
I am on AT&T Straighttalk service.
AT&T doesn’t support WiFi calling. Their excuse is that their coverage is good enough that most folks don’t need it. With Sprint, you are more likely to be in a dead zone.
Isn’t this the equivalent of an admission that their wireless data networks are robust? Shouldn’t they do away with throttling of people who have “unlimited” data plans? If a person talks too much on their “unlimited” talk plans, will they make the phone calls sound like slo-mo?
