Google Glass vs. Apple Watch: In form against function, Apple beats Google

“The Romans had a phrase for it: Ars est celare artem. That is: “The art is to conceal the art.” When you’re doing something really difficult in public with the intent of gaining attention, don’t let on how difficult it is to do,” Charles Arthur writes for The Guardian.

“This came to mind as I considered the contrast between Google Glass and the Apple Watch,” Arthur writes. “Here are two giants of the technology industry, with respected worldwide brands; they vie for top position among the best-known and most-valued technology brands. And they’re both moving into the wearable technology space. Google is doing it with the emphasis on technology.”

“Glass is technology, being forced towards people on the basis that, because it’s technology, they’ll want it. So far, the evidence is: no, they don’t,” Arthur writes. “At which point we turn to the Apple Watch.”

  1. “I’d say it’s a safe bet that Apple’s watch will have sold more in a month than Google Glass has since its inception.”

I’d say it’s a safe bet that Apple’s watch will sell more in its first 24 hours of pre-orders than Google Glass has since its inception.

    1. My grandmother had 2 miscarriages, it more like comparing to them as we have been hearing about glass since 2011 but you still cant buy it outside the US and have to join a program inside the US. Even Google seem to have lost interest as you dont hear much about it these days

  2. Google glass is an obtrusive device that can be an invasion of privacy while the Apple watch has no recording equipment, it’s just a subset of what an iPhone can already do. There is no comparison. Nobody is going to get punched in the face for wearing an apple watch unless it’s being stolen.

      1. It’s a matter of perception. All smartphones are audio and video recording devices but if you put yours on the table next to your plate it won’t have the same impact of a recording device pointed at your face. I’ve never been uncomfortable with a smartphone on the Table, but if somebody picks up and starts recording a video or taking pictures, I get self-conscious. Google glass is always pointed some victim and potentially recording. A watch on a wrist isn’t nearly as obtrusive as a pair of glasses with a camera poking out of them.

        1. That doesn’t matter. You said plain and simple that the Apple Watch has no recording equipment.

The Apple Watch has a microphone. A microphone is a piece of recording equipment. Therefor, the Apple Watch has recording equipment.

coolfactor was just pointing that out.

        2. You’re right, it does have a microphone. But the main point of the conversation was invasiveness. I’m no expert on the Apple watch, I have no desire to get one so I’ve ignored Its features. Even if it did have a camera, it still would not be as invasive as Google glass which can point all it’s recording equipment at you just with the turn of the head.

A watch or a smartphone has to be manipulated in such a way that it’s obvious that it’s being used for recording. Google class just requires the user to look in your direction.

Recording equipment doesn’t make me uncomfortable unless it’s pointed right at me.

  3. I love technology. So technology is something I definitely want.

However, putting on Google Glass is pretty much equivalent to wearing a sign that says “I’m a geek. Steal my lunch money.”

Granted, I am a geek. But I don’t want to look like one.

  4. I have said it before I will say it again, Google is not a technology company they are an advertising company that uses technology to con people into giving up their private, personal and valuable data. You are the only product that Google sells.
