Apple will hold a special media event on October 16th, Re-code’s John John Paczkowski reports.
It’s widely expected that Apple will unveil new A8-powered, second-gen 64-bit iPad Air and iPad mini models (12.9-inch iPad Plus, too?) with Touch ID and anti-reflective screens and, possibly, new Macs along with the public release of OS X Yosemite. Apple TV? One more thing?
Media invitations have yet to be sent – Apple usually emails them roughly a week and a half before their events.

Yes, but it still beats asking if they’ve got the new XS-493XKE version of the iPad.
Which is more in line with how most of the consumer electronics brands (such as Sony) name their products. Many of have followed Apple’s lead and ended that practice (other than for internal documents, which Apple also does).
Point is, it can be confusing but it’s still a breath of fresh air compared to how things used to be — and still are — with other companies.
A great example is the Pioneer car stereos that can be updated to have Airplay.

These include the AVIC-F60DAB, AVIC-F960DAB, AVIC-F960BT, AVIC-F860BT and the AVH-X8600BT, as well as the European equivalent of the AppRadio 4 called SPH-DA120.”
Funny. But Apple’s strategy of calling somthing “mid-2014” can be maddeningly vague when you’re trying to find out if the relative you have on the phone bought the new model with the latest chipset.
Yeah, and it’s so much more difficult that explaining the same thing with most competitors’ products. “Yeah, this is the new HP Pavilion, the 17-f004x.” Oh, wait – nobody cares.
I hear they will call it The Best Damn iPad So Far.
Even more difficult to find out what model a person has over the phone.
If you have Internet handy, then the model number from the Settings will get you what you need.

I wish they would just refer to them as iPad and put a year in parentheses to denote release date. You don’t see the new BMW 325 2 with new control screen, it’s just the BMW 325.
You’re funny. BMW was clear and simple in the old days — the model number denoted the chassis and the engine displacement. Clear and simple. But you cannot buy a 325 today. BMW’s 3-series today starts with the “320i Sedan and ends with the “335i xDrive Gran Turismo”. That’s not even including the “ActiveHybrid 3” and the “328i xDrive Sports Wagon”.
Apparently even the best companies in the world are being managed by marketing idiots.
I have been advocating the same (SANE) naming convention for years. Put a date to it, done! Even the village idiot knows INSTANTLY what he or she is buying. Particularly helpful on the reseller and refurb markets. Make it easier for us, Apple.
