Full video: Apple CEO Tim Cook’s interview with Charlie Rose – Part 2

In part two of his wide-ranging interview with Charlie Rose, Apple CEO Tim Cook talks about privacy, security, the environment, U2, diversity, competition, Apple data centers, renewable energy, hiking the U.S. national parks, human rights, (Product) RED, and beyond the Internet.

If we focus on great products that enrich people’s lives and we do that well, really well, the financial returns will follow and our shareholders will be happy and it’s a continuous circle. I like that because it’s simple.

Changing the world… It’s the values of our company. It’s been the values of our company forever…. And [to] Steve’s credit, he put these values into the company… It was his mentoring and teaching that instilled these values into the company. So, if I step off the curb this afternoon – I hope I don’t – but, if I do, those will be the values of the company tomorrow and the next day and the next day. It’s that deep… It’s the privilege of a lifetime to be [at Apple] because there’s no place like it on earth. – Apple CEO Tim Cook

  1. “If we focus on great products that enrich people’s lives and we do that well, really well, the financial returns will follow and our shareholders will be happy and it’s a continuous circle. I like that because it’s simple.”

    Best. Business. Model. Ever.

  2. Several people I know were curious when they heard Cook was going to be on Charlie Rose. I’m not sure what they were expecting, but they came away disappointed because Cook didn’t really say anything of significant substance — not much that we didn’t really know before. Perhaps people were hoping to get a scoop about the next big thing. Obviously, they don’t know Apple (nor Cook). Still, Cook was quite elusive and, since he doesn’t have the unique charisma of Jobs, it ended up a snooze fest for the most of the regular audiences.

Those of us who know what to listen for came away with interesting tidbits.

    1. When Charley Rose interviews someone it is not about reporting exciting new announcements, or sordid details. It’ not TMZ. It is about getting to know what makes that person who they are. What I came away from this interview with was that Tim Cook is a very decent human being, and a person I could easily be close friends with. I can’t think of anybody I would prefer to have running the company in which the bulk of my investments reside than Tim. In an industry dominated by sleazy hucksters and thieves, Tim stands out as a man of integrity and conscience. Our company is in good hands.

    2. I watched and said to myself ‘amazing’. Tim Cook is an excellent spokeshuman for Apple. The conversation was relaxed. Tim Cook is remarkably literate and well spoken. He portrays both calm (‘Zen master’) and enthusiasm.

But if the coke heads are looking for EnTeRTaInMEnT, go away! Go chat with your ego in the mirror or something. This was Apple the company beautifully portrayed by the single best CEO the company has had outside of brilliant Steve Jobs. What a great man is Tim Cook and what a great Apple he continues and engenders. His discussion on Diversity (‘with a capital D’) all by itself was inspirational. Bravo! Apple is incredibly blessed to have this fellow carrying the torch into the future. It was not until this interview that this fact was made so clear and obvious.

I hope Tim does further interviews, on into the future, as Apple progresses while the dopey biznizzes of the world wonder why they’re in constant desperation mode. Apple really is #1 in the world on so many levels. With Tim there, Apple is going to stay that way.
