“Apple executives have discussed charging around $400 for the company’s new wearable device,” Dawn Chmielewski and John Paczkowski report for Re/code.
“Pricing has yet to be finalized for the forthcoming product, which is expected to begin shipping next year,” Chmielewski and Paczkowski. “Sources say consumers should expect a range of prices for different models including lower priced versions.”
Chmielewski and Paczkowski, “It is not immediately clear if the price will be settled in time for Apple’s Sept. 9 press conference when it is expected to introduce the new iPhones and announce a wearable device.”

So if they talk about what the Apple watch will be on Sept. 9th but not release it until next year that gives the copiers more time to plot and scheme. I kinda wish they wouldn’t say anything until the watch is actually ready to release.
My thought as well. Hence, ‘wish we could say more.’
As far as I know, Apple themselves haven’t breathed a word so far, and thus all of us have been forced to shoulder our way through a crowd of natterers, handkerchief held to our noses against the befoulled atmosphere of fetid rumours,
They need the developers on board, too. Hence the announcement lead time.
Yeah I thought of that. I still no likey showing the competition what’s up but chances are Apple’s watch wrinkle will be a difficult ecosystem and tech nut to crack for others anyway.
Doesn’t matter. Even if they match the features, Apple’s ecosystem is the thing that makes “what do you do after you buy it” have an actual consumer friendly answer.
Other companies most likely won’t be able to cut the required deals in time even if they do copy the product.

The article did not say “iWatch”, but wearable. To make the device universally desirable, it has to accept the apps each user might want to use.
That means Apple needs time between announcement and release for the app developers to deliver at the time of the hardware release.
Apple is so far ahead of the curve in design and mfg technologies, that a few months delay between announcement and release is not going to let the SlamDunks of the world ace them out.
Let us hope there are just way too many pieces to the Apple iWatch puzzle for others to get close to matching.
As far as health benefits the first company capable of making a wrist band (in whatever form) that easily gives body blood sugar levels will make a bloody fortune. I should think the impact of such capability on diabetic and pre-diabetic people will be profound.
Several groups have recently announced a non-invasive real time blood sugar sensing technology. Web search will get the announcements.
The question will be when it is FDA cleared and who will deliver it.

Apple announced the first iPhone some six months before release. Maybe they need time to get regulatory approval during which time the specs would leak anyway? Maybe, as others have said, they want time for developers to produce apps?
In six months no one is going to make a credible copy. They will be like those fake Rolexes they sell for $15.

That’s about the range this device would go for if it ever came out. Consider Apple only makes high end phones. The question is, what will the consumer get for a $400 for something that straps to your wrist.
