ABC News viewers watch 50% more live video on Apple TV than on desktop and mobile combined

“Roughly six weeks ago, ABC News launched a new Apple TV channel offering a wide range of live and on-demand content from both national and select local feeds,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors. “Based on the first 30 days of availability, ABC News has now put together an infographic that offers a look at how the channel is being used.”

Among the interesting observations:

• Live video usage on Apple TV, which accounts for 20 percent of channel views, is 50 percent higher than on mobile and desktop combined.

• Apple TV viewers spend 65 percent more time per visit than desktop users.

• Peak usage for the ABC News Apple TV channel falls at 9 PM Eastern Time, likely due to that time period encompassing evening viewing hours for most of the United States.

  1. That’s great, but can I just get the full recap of the World News Tonight program stitched together for each evening (sans commercials)? Yeah it’s mostly there, but its broken up into bite size chunks with no sort by date. I like to watch the news each night, but picking bite-size individual segments is a waste of time.

  2. ABC Newz- Faux Newz Lite meets TMZ- is a joke. The story selection for “World News” is hardly global, Beltway Villager in subject selection and tone, poorly researched, borders on cheerleading and is about as informing as Mad Magazine. Good Morning America is so bad it makes Today look serious. This Week- a.k.a The John McCain Show- is long removed from any significance.

As to any local content, local news in the US is Ken and Barbie (usually a salt and pepper pair of spokesmodels) following the latest in Yellow Journalism (if it bleeds it leads exempt for celebutard news) while acting the part of journalists.

If you want to find out what is happening in the world ABC Newz is not the place to find it.

  3. These news channels, sadly, are among the few that are FREE. No “tv provider” required, so it’s not a far stretch to believe somebody would rather watch the news via Apple TV while sitting on their couch as opposed to watching it on their phone when out and about.

Love my Apple TV; hate that the cable/content providers still have a stranglehold.

  4. I wish this was a lesson that the cable nets would learn. Right now though, in order to watch most shows on these network apps on the iPad or Apple TV, you need to have A) A cable TV subscription and B) a cable company that has a deal to allow this to work. I have Time Warner Cable which has NO deals, so most of the video apps for Cable and broadcast networks on the iPad and Apple TV don’t work. I wish they’d offer the ability to subscribe directly. I’d gladly pay the handful of channels I watch a couple of bucks a month for their content on demand and live if I didn’t have to pay for cable TV and if I could get FOX, local CBS, local ABC, local NBC, CW, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, Discovery, A&E, Bravo, SyFy, Comedy Central, TCM, TNT, TBS. Even if they charged me more than they get from my cable company, it would still be far cheaper for me.
