“When Apple published their new ‘Stickers’ ad for the MacBook Air last week, I presumed it would be a boon for sellers of MacBook stickers and decals,” Graham Spencer reports for MacStories. “So earlier this week I decided to reach out to a few sellers of MacBook stickers and decals to see what kind of impact the ad from Apple has had on their store visits and sales.”
“The result is probably what you would have guessed: visits and sales rose dramatically last week when Apple’s ad was released,” Spencer reports. “It was the universal reaction I got from the sellers I talked to.”
“One of the sellers that was willing to give me more detailed information was Benjamin Clark from The Decal Guru. They saw a quadrupling of orders for MacBook decals since the airing of Apple’s ad. In terms of unique visitors they saw an increase from a steady 500 per day (prior to the ad) to 4,500 at its highest last week,” Spencer reports. “I also spoke to a number of Etsy store owners that sell MacBook stickers. Geeky Decals was one of them and in their case they’ve seen a significant increase in daily sales of stickers. Prior to the ad they used to sell 8-10 stickers per day, but since the ad they’ve been selling between 40 and 50 stickers per day.”

Interestingly, a column on MediaPost (an advertising and marketing website) trashed the Stickers ad and basically claimed Apple was failing in its transition from plucky outsider to industry leader.
Some of what the writer says is fine, but he gets so much wrong about Apple — and doesn’t even get the name of the damn PRODUCT right!

Doesn’t get the product name CONSISTENT, either. Mac Air or MacAir? Which is it?
Answer: neither.
I didn’t know we were allowed to mess with the design ourselves. I can see needing to be able to visually differentiate between computers after Macs take over the corporate world.
“Video removed by user.” Yeah because why would you want people to watch your ads?
Why would anyone cover up any a MacBook with vinyl stickers? I bet Samsung is behind this!
That was funny.
And to answer the question, my daughters’ school gives a MacBook Air to every pupil 5th grate and up (all the way through high school). Some 900 kids are walking around the school with identical computers.
The stickers are the only way they can tell them apart.
