“Market expectations for Apple’s anticipated ‘iWatch’ may be grossly overestimated, as well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said on Thursday that he expects that only 3 million wrist-worn smart devices from Apple will make it to store shelves by the end of this year,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.
“In a note to investors, a copy of which was obtained by AppleInsider, Kuo of KGI Securities said he believes the market is expecting that Apple will ship between 5 million and 10 million ‘iWatch’ units before the end of 2014,” Hughes reports. “But he now expects that issues will push production of the device will be pushed back from September to the second half of November, resulting in fewer units available.”
“This anticipated shorter period of production has prompted Kuo to decrease his projected build plans from 5 million units this year to just 3 million units,” Hughes reports. “In addition, Kuo also anticipates that Apple may face sapphire cover lens production bottlenecks. As a result, he predicts that at least half of finished ‘iWatch’ products will ship with glass covers instead of sapphire.”

Kuo also Sid there would be no retina iPad mini update in 2014 as well. Recent reports suggest he was wrong about that too.

FUD ALERT
Hypothetical product with imaginary features and unknown price. But I’m sure whatever else they say about it is spot on.
Don’t forget dates that changed from one hypothetical to another.
I’d say that’s pretty good volume for a product that doesn’t exist.
So an “analyst” says this. Great stuff! Now we know for sure that the iWatch will be a great success.
We’ll count me as one of those 3 million. I think they overwhelmingly underestimated iPhone sales before it’s debut. That’s why I tend to ignore estimates in regard to Apple technology. My guess is Apple iWatch will be a device a lot more people are going to want. They’re not known for pushing me to devices. It will blow the competition out of the water in my opinion. That’s the Apple way. If it weren’t, Apple would have brought it out two years ago. They’re not going to release a product until it’s awesome, cool, nice looking, useful and full of technology their competitors couldn’t conceive.
Apple is unlikely to ship any iWatches until they actually announce an iWatch. Given the track record or the Apple branded big screen rumors, I refuse to believe there is an iWatch until Tim Cook says there is.
Can anyone explain to me how it is possible to precisely estimate the market potential of a device that has not been released? It can be 3 million or 30 million depending on what the watch will do. It is clear that these analysts make their money by misguiding their clients. In the case of Apple, it happens all the time. Any time Apple stock goes up these analysts think of some BS to pull it down.
They sure did pour on the extra FUD this week. It was almost as bad as mid-December 2012 through January 2013. The only difference is there hasn’t been as many paid by Samsung anti-Apple trolls on the blogs.
According to my research, Apple will give you a free iWatch with the purchase of a Mac Pro. If you spend $10K on the Mac Pro, you will get a shout out on twitter. Can you top that Ming?
1. Even if this is true, it would exceed the sales of all other smart watch brands combined, and that includes FIVE iterations of the Samsung smart watch (Galaxy Gear, Galaxy Gear 2, Galaxy Neo, Galaxy Neo 2, Galaxy Wear).
2. This would be due to production problems – the problems associated with putting out a vastly superior product to the ugly, square, not at all innovative and poor user experience Samsung watches – and not lack of demand.
