  1. I have noticed my system is freezing more often of late (since the last update). Quite frankly, I would be happy to pay for a more reliable OS. I have 2 Apple HD screens attached to a MBPro with many many Safari windows so I am keeping my fingers crossed for the Safari update to make things more reliable.

    1. I have had fewer freezes of late. I found Safari to be the big culprit. Like you I tend to have many many windows and tabs open, and eventually the whole system gets choked for resources.
Keeping Safari tabs down to a reasonable number (or at least less unreasonable) makes a big difference.

    2. You’ve got problems that need some troubleshooting. I have never had a single system freeze in the last five years, except one that I caused by doing something stupid. I use both of my Macs for things such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Parallels, and other memory and CPU hogging apps. Neither system has given me any trouble.

      1. It may not have happened to you, but it does happen. There’s even a dialog that will come up some of the time informing the user that system resources are exhausted and you must kill some apps to keep going. It gives a list and a kill button. Other times there’s not sufficient resources for even that, and instead the system just freezes.
It’s not easy to do, but it can be done. I tend to get very lazy about closing Safari windows and tabs, and over time might have several hundred open. When I stopped doing that the freezes also stopped.

        1. Yes, just like you I did something “stupid”. Except that a single app should never be able to take down the whole system. And unlike you, I don’t take the position that if something isn’t happening to me then it’s not a problem for anyone.

  2. My only problem recently has been AirPlay. It will connect for screen but NOT for sound. Only fix i’ve found is restarting. We’ll see what happens now.

  3. The usual advice for newbies:
    1) Repair your boot volume before installing the update.
    2) YES, repair your permissions before the update, and ignore anyone saying otherwise.
    3) Download and install the COMBO update, not the regular update, as it will potentially clean up any stuff that’s become corrupted in your system.

    1. Derek, great ‘usual advice for newbies’ and some forgetful pros perhaps,
I do a similar pre-update routine in Windows
and it made preventative maintenance sense / logic to do it on Macs too

Maybe that’s why I’ve had zero issues with both systems for years,
and certain it’s not luck, or magic hardware 😉

  4. I use a MacBook Pro 10.9.4. How do I close Safari TABS? There must be one hundred tabs on my Mac. There used to be hidden stars. When I hovered over a tab, the star appeared and I could click on it to remove that tab. I no longer have any stars (or any icon) to click on for deleting tabs. I checked preferences and it talks about bookmarks. I want to keep pages that I have bookmarked. I want to delete TABS. I pulled down every menu and searched Help and found nothing about deleting/closing tabs. Please HELP!!
