Samsung CFO admits quarterly results to be ‘not that good’

Patently Apple has been consistently reporting on the myth that Samsung’s S5 is a smash hit in various reports since April. Our most recent report posted last week was titled ‘Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is Confirmed a Dud & May Hurt Financials,'” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“According to the Financial Times today, ‘Samsung Electronics has turned bearish on its second-quarter performance, with its chief financial officer saying he expects results to be ‘not that good’ as rising competition stifles profit growth at the mobile division,'” Purcher reports. “The downbeat comments made on Wednesday by Lee Sang-hoon, made to local media reporters on the way to a meeting and later confirmed by Samsung, stoked concerns that earnings may be worse than market consensus.”

Purcher reports, “CW Chung, an analyst at Nomura stated that ‘There must have been some adverse effects from the stronger won and its smartphones and tablets don’t seem to be selling as well as Samsung had hoped.'”

“Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone in April along with up to $600 in freebies, the first time it had offered incentives for its best-selling series of devices,” Song Jung-a reports for The Financial Times. “But the company is expected to face intensifying competition in the premium market with Apple set to launch a larger-screen iPhone in the next few months.”

“Samsung plans to give guidance for the second quarter between July 7 and July 9,” Song reports. “IBK Securities estimates Samsung’s smartphone shipments fell to 78m units, from 87.5m units in the first quarter. Worryingly, analysts reckon the weakening performance of the mobile unit could have a knock-on effect on other businesses given the company’s vertically integrated structure.”

  1. Samsung dumb phones may be a success in places like India, but these numbers game is not the real deal, cheap plastic and stolen IP android OS is A lack lustre experience. Nasty 💩👀

  2. Haven’t we already watched this story? The last time the story was told, where were Blackberries in it. And the company, (RIMM) was based in Canada. Maybe this time, they will not stop at the 2 for 1 deal and go straight to buy 1 get 4 FREE (or as many as you can hand out to friends and family). Got to keep those market share numbers up until the day you close the doors on that product line.

By the way, how are things going for Mr. Dell these days?

  3. Upon reporting bad numbers Samsung’s stock price will go up. And Apple’s stock price will drop as a result of Samsung’s bad numbers.

Makes no sense but such is life.

  4. Samsung needs to release or announce a 21″ Galaxy SHT with built in 7.1 speakers and full wrap around flexible display with Breath ID built in! That should give them the advantage for the next 10 years!!!

  5. What gets me about Samsung’s approach to smartphones is that it’s so unlike what they did in digital music players. When the dust settled, and all of the serious competition for the iPod had given up, Samsung players were still there, being sold at Best Buy and other places. And they survived by not spending a ton of money trying to “kill” the iPod. Instead they just quietly settled into the number two spot, offering a cheap alternative to less-discerning buyers while Creative and Sony and Dell and all the others made costly fools of themselves.

But in the smartphone arena, Samsung can’t seem to resist chasing that top spot in the mindshare, ripping off Apple and spending piles of money on legal expenses, staging ridiculous, expensive launch events, and basically trying everything they can think of to be thought of as the “cool” phone.

They figured out how to survive and be profitable in MP3 players, but in smartphones, they’re acting more like Creative.

    1. The reason being that shitsum are one obsessed with apple.

And noticed this all started when Steve jobs died.

They’ve even got some Korean weirdo wandering around their global head office who pretends he’s steve jobs.

  6. They’re still (overly) reliant on GOOG for a key component of their product. There’s only so much depth on integration they can manage with GOOG despite being the most successful partner woth them. And Tizen can’t be anywhere close to helping them with the deep integration they will need vs iPhone, especially after the coming iOS is released.

  7. I am not a fan of Samsung – far from it. But it is worth noting that 78M units in one quarter is a big number, even if it is a rather large drop from the 87.5M units in their first quarter. It goes without saying that a large number of these units are low-end, lower performing phones. And, in terms of profits, Apple has repeatedly shown that it is better to have most of the top tier of the market than all of the mid and bottom tiers. But we should not dance on Samsung’s grave before the company is buried. Samsung may be a shameless copier of Apple products, but it is also the best shameless copier of Apple products in the world and far too many people don’t know about or care about the difference.

    1. That’s 78 million smartphone ‘sales’. Including low-end, almost no profit phones. If Samsung had sold more expensive, higher profit phones, they wouldn’t be in the position they are in now.

  8. Analyst will view this data and say that the smartphone market is getting saturated. Everyone who sells a smartphone will have there stock forecasts adjusted down. Google will go up because the give away the smartphone software so will not be impacted.
