Wearable device shipments expected to surge in the third quarter

“Wearable device shipments are expected to surge in the third quarter as most vendors have decided to launch devices during the quarter,” Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“Vendors which originally planned to release products in the first half, have also postponed their plans as they wait for the market or product designs to mature, according to sources from the upstream supply chain,” Lee and Tsai report. “Vendors including Apple, Samsung Electronics, Epson, Sony, Acer, Asustek Computer and Adidas have already prepared or launched wearable devices for the third quarter.”

“The sources pointed out that most wearable devices will enter mass production in August to meet year-end holiday demand,” Lee and Tsai report. “With Apple’s iWatch expected to enter mass production in the second half and trigger a new wave of wearable device demand, some market watchers believe the iWatch will enjoy about four million unit sales in 2014 and will see rapid growth in the future.”

  1. Growth in wearables all down to the expectation that Apple will release a device.
At this point I hope so because the stock will take a hit with all this hype on a non-released product. Even with larger iPhones being launched I have a feeling the market will use a lack of iWatch to punish the stock.

  2. “Vendors which originally planned to release products in the first half, have also postponed their plans as they wait for the market or product designs to mature, …”. Thats one way of putting waiting to see what Apple produces before trying to compete and/or seeing how long it would take to copy.

  3. Seeing as unit sales of wearables have been very low to date, any type of progress can be termed a “surge.”

Wearable sales of millions of units per quarter will only occur when Apple joins the party.
