“Over the weekend, Apple’s chief designer Jony Ive and musician Bono attended the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where Bono was honored with the LionHeart Award for his work with the (Product) RED campaign to raise money for the fight against AIDS,” Juli Clover reports for MacRumors.
“During their appearance, Ive and Bono sat down for a 45 minute interview. While the entirety of the interview has not yet been shared, Cannes has posted a short highlights reel, with the first two minutes of the video featuring Bono,” Clover reports. “In the spot, Bono describes working with Steve Jobs on (Product) RED, recounting a particular conversation with Jobs over the parentheses that are part of the (Product) RED name logo.”
“Over the course of Apple’s partnership with (RED), the company has released (RED) iPod nanos and shuffles, iPad Smart Covers, iPhone Bumpers, and iPhone 5s cases, with a portion of each sale going directly to the charity,” Clover reports. “To date, Apple has raised approximately $70 million for (Product) RED, with 100 percent of that money going towards HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.”

Crabapple … I’m taking a personal poll. Are you by chance a liberal? The reason I ask is that I have found many people (including those in my own circles) who respond in an argument or discussion with personal attacks and disparaging remarks rather than contributing real content and value to the discussion or debate tend to be liberals. I have to agree with you. It’s like the charities that give mosquito nets to Africans to protect them from deadly malaria carrying mosquitos instead of insecticide, which is definitely what we would insist on. For AIDS, I don’t think the charity is providing clear emphatic training about the danger inherent in having anal sex with lots of partners. Avoiding this practice would help reduce AIDS more than anything else.
… And having intercourse during a woman’s menses without protection, sharing drug needles or any other way of crossing body liquids between two people. It’s a blood borne disease.
With the odd (to me) resurgence of heroin in the USA, there is also going to be another new wave of HIV infections. (Needle sharing).
Part of the difficulty is in trying to counter deep seeded cultural beliefs that include such behaviors as raping virgins and unprotected sex. These cultural beliefs and behaviors help to further spread STD’s like hiv/aids. Like most Charities and education systems much money is locked up in administration salaries and legal fees … and not on the ground contributing to the mission. Many Non-profits operate this way too. Even Oprah was discouraged when she tried to open a non-profit to help educate young black children in Georgia. She discovered that only about 15¢ for every dollar she spent would actually reach and impact the children. She scraped the project.

These organizations such as the Gates Foundation and the Clinton Foundation are actually spreading disease in Africa. They are on par with the ecoterroism of Monsanto.

I am not going to comment on the merits of your assertion. i do not know whether or not they are true.
However, it is true that charitable organizations have to be very careful that their “help” is compatible with both the short-term and long-term interests of the local society. For instance, multiplying crop yields by introducing modern farming methods – tractors, seeds, fertilizer, etc. – sounds like a great way to improve quality of life for a poor and malnourished country. But it is also unsustainable once the foreign aid ends – tractors break down with no replacement parts, no money for gas or foreign seed stock or fertilizer, etc. The end result could be much worse than no help at all. It is important to work with the local people to develop an approach that works for them, and it may be quite different than the approach that westerners would prefer.

meanwhile stuff like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, some types of cancer are still in the dark ages from being understood much less defeated. Tens of millions of Americans and plenty more are aging in the baby boom generation and people should better get cracking on solving these . Aids because it’s politicized by Influence Masters like Bono are well supported but not these. Frankly I know more people with Alzheimer’s, Cancer, MS and Parkinsons than Aids (Aids was plaque in N. America but with proper ‘health education’ it’s gone down a lot but what I’ve read in Africa etc the culture of machismo “protected sex is lame” and multiple sex partners is the ruling norm which is causing the big issues. B.s? No, a sub saharan african is 17 Times more likely to get aids than an Asian and 25 times more than a Middle Easterner (so it’s NOT poverty etc but Lifestyle Choice).
It’s hard to pour money into stuff where people don’t seem to want to help themselves , meanwhile in N. America (USA, Canada) govt and health authorities are turning a blind eye to things like Alzheimer’s (since they can still walk around and it’s a ‘mental’ issue , families should deal with it). In my small town elderly have killed their spouses when they couldn’t deal with Alzheimer’s etc anymore.
