“When the iPhone first came out in 2007, it looked like a giant among mobile phones. This fancy new slate-like phone weighed in at 4.8 ounces and had a 3.5-inch diagonal screen,” Nick Bilton reports for The New York Times. “Yet now, the iPhone 5 — which is even bigger than its predecessors with a 4-inch diagonal screen — seems tiny compared to most Google Android and Windows smartphones. (Let’s not even compare it to phablets. That would just be mean.)”
“But look no further than the Apple rumor-mill to see that the quest for bigger is about to give the iPhone 6 a much-needed face — um — stretch,” Bilton reports. “There have been reports coming from all over the globe and blogosphere that Apple is expected to release two new iPhones this year, one that will have a 4.7-inch screen, and another version with an even larger 5.5-inch one.”
“So do customers want a bigger, flatter iPhone? Earlier this month when I wrote about the HTC One, I noted that while I loved the idea of a larger phone, I couldn’t bring myself to switch to Google Android, which still feels clunky to me. Some readers agreed with me. ‘I’m old and would love a larger screen,’ wrote Alan Burnham in the comments,” Bilton reports. “But others disagreed, seeming quite happy with the size of Apple’s current offerings. ‘Like another (female) reader, I want to keep my phone in the most convenient ‘phone holster’ imaginable: my bra,’ wrote a woman from New England. ‘The 5s iPhone is already sufficiently larger than my former early iPhone that it is making that practice less comfortable than it used to be.'”

I would never presume to speak on anyone else’s behalf about what size phone they should have. 3 iPhone sizes should pacify everyone should it come about and the size snobbery can then stop. Pick what’s best for you and tell everyone else to take a long walk off a short plank. Captain Blood out. 🙂
My two cents: as long as all things equal. If the smaller version is limited, as the current 5S/5C models, I may opt out on upgrading to carrying a brick around.
I think Apple will keep the smaller size and you are entitled to keep your older iPhone or buy a newer one of your choice. Old or new, big or small will be everyone’s choice. One man’s brick can be another man’s gem. Buy or keep what’s useful to you. And then the Fandroid will be compelled to STFU as they fade into the tech sunset.
That’s what should have happened with a couple years of the iPhone launch unfortunately SJ’s Apple always wanted o produce as many phones with as high a profit as possible and variations reduces that profitability. Of course its always hidden under claims of it being one size fits all because that size is the perfect one a message conveniently reworked when the size is adjusted of course.
Not only do I want a new iPod touch, i want one as big as it can get while still able to fit in my front jeans pocket.

The comment about the bra as iPhone holster is gratuitous drool fodder. Also awful is the notion of switching to a smaller Android or Windows device, should iPhones become too large for comfort. A holster-bearing woman who is a proper Apple fangirl will do no such thing, instead opting for breast reduction surgery. /s

I submitted a version of my comment above to the New York Times in response to their silly blog. The Grey Lady didn’t have the cojones, or the sense of humour, to publish it. They can dish it out, but they can’t take it.
Bras are already stuffed to the gills, what with the rampant obesity in this country. That also negates my idea to use crotchless panties.
I’ve been using an M-Horse N9000W for the last few months. (It’s a Chinese knock off a Samsung Note 3.with a 5.5inch HD screen. Couldn’t resist a chance to give samesong a taste of its own medicine). Ha ha I wanted to try out a 5.5 inch screen. I’ve been carrying a iPad 3 around for years. Boy is now big and heavy. If apple release a 5.5 inch iPhone with retina screen. I’m in. I’ve been using an iPhone 5 and a generic android phone for the past year. iOS wins in every area and the hardware is in a class of its own. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve had to do a hardware reset on android because the phone locks up. And I’ve nearly launched it out the window or at the wall countless times too. Not once has the iPhone lock up or caused me to attempt to throw it down the road. Looking forward to Monday and seeing a larger iPhone. 5.5″ seems to be a great size for a phablet. Well after my limited testing anyway.
The male phablet types should find a sporran.
I’ve begged apple for years to upsize the font in contacts, to no avail. It’s hard to read when you need reading glasses but don’t have them everywhere you go…
There are options under the Accessibility section of General Settings that should alleviate some of your vision issues with the iPhone. I do not know if the font size changes apply to Contacts, but I doubt Apple would allow you to adjust the font of everything else and not the Contacts list.
Give that a try to relieve the strain on those tired eyes. 🙂

Agreed. I’m going to give a 4.7″ iPhone a try when it comes out, but I would love for them to keep the 4″ option alive well into the future. So let’s hope they don’t kill that off, because I see myself sticking smaller long-term rather than graduating to a greater-than-5-inch clown phone. Three of my close friends use Galaxy Notes and they look absolutely ridiculous.
But most do. They may or may not admit it. But most do. Simply put, the larger iPhones will outsell the current iPhone 5/5C size. Even with an increase in price for the larger phones. They will out sell the current form factor. That will end all the discussion by the couple of fanboys who constantly bitch about Apple making a larger iPhone.
It’s pretty presumptuous of you to say most do. How do you know what most people want? Even public polls are often wrong. Remember when Gallup poll consistently had Obama trailing Romney?
It’s easy to say the next iPhone will out sell the previous one since this has been the case for each new iteration of iPhone since it was released.

I’ll just go ahead and say it – there is no perfect iPhone, only perfect iPhones. Offer the iPhone in two screen sizes, one 4″ another 4.5″, and they’ll do great. It worked with iPad, it’ll work with iPhone.
Agreed though the iPad mini seems to have been brought out of hibernation only when the pressure seemed irresistible. Think they were caught unawares by the large phone phenomenon and thus sorting it has taken even longer. Hopefully they have finally sorted that error.
I wouldn’t mind a bigger screen, but at the same time I really don’t want my phone to be that much bigger. I would really want as much of the bezel removed as possible to offset any increase as much as possible.
A bigger iPhone would complement Apple’s product line.
11″ and 13″ MacBook Airs.
13″ and 15″ MacBook Pros.
iPad Mini and iPad Air.
23″ iMac and 27″ iMac.
So a larger iPhone alongside one at it’s current size makes sense in its current product lineup.
