More blood on Apple iTunes Store’s play button: Samsung pulls plug on music, e-book store duds

“Samsung has revealed that amidst an reorganization of the company, they plan to shut down their e-book and music stores (AKA Book and Music Hubs), effective July 1,” ENCORE reports.

“Samsung announced the shutdown in an email sent to users of the service, stating that the content will no longer be available after shutdown and advising customers to download all purchased content before the deadline of July 1st,” ENCORE reports. “Samsung launched their various media hubs in March 2013 as a part of an ambitious plan to create an ecosystem similar to Apple’s iBooks and iTunes music service.”

ENCORE reports, “However, even after high profile deals with artists such as Jay Z, the service failed to gain significant traction.”

  1. Looks like ol’ Sammy is up to their dirty tricks again. To paraphrase an artist I love and respect, it’s like this: “Anything, anything, anything for money, I’d lie to you, I’d die for you, I’d…even sell my Seoul to a Chaebol!”

  2. Ecosystem ecosystem ecosystem Ecosystem..Samsung is better off letting others handle ecosystem services. It is its own animal–as they seem to have discovered. They can now concentrate on just hardware/software (copying). But this doesn’t bode so well for their Tizen OS which is on the table or off the table depending on what month it is. You’d really think if they were going to launch Tizon phones and tablets anytime soon that they would need some type of ecosystem momentum to jack into. This makes that look a little unlikely now..
