Japan’s Renesas to sell iPhone display chip business to Synaptics, not Apple, sources say

“Renesas Electronics Corp plans to sell its majority stake in a maker of iPhone display chips to Synaptics Inc, another smartphone chip supplier, according to sources familiar with the matter,” Reiji Murai reports for Reuters.

“Apple Inc had also been in talks about a possible purchase of the stake in Renesas SP Driver in what was seen as a potential move to shore up its global supply chain,” Murai reports, “but the sources said those talks failed to make progress and Renesas had narrowed its consideration to Synaptics.”

Murai reports, “Renesas has been looking to sell its 55 percent stake in the unit that is the sole supplier of display driver chips for Apple’s iPhone…”

  1. Silly move by Synaptics.
    If they had Apple onboard as a partner, there would be no question of them having to compete for supply contracts from Apple and they would have had access to Apple’s road map.
    Success without lifting a finger!!!
    Now all they will have if they succeed in owning the company 100% is a huge research bill needing a source of cash from investors who’s main reason for investing is a huge return even if it means mortgaging the business.
    I can only be sympathetic to them by excusing them as engineers and not entrepreneurs, the Synapsis management that is.
