“Nearly two dozen patent suits and countersuits between Motorola and Apple that date back to 2010 have been dropped,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
“Apple and Google did not agree to cross license each others technologies, and they didn’t agree to not sue each other,” P.E.D. reports. “The issues that caused Steve Jobs to call Android a ‘stolen product’ remain thorns in both company’s sides.”

“In a joint statement on Friday, the companies said the settlement does not include a cross license to their respective patents,” Levine reports. “Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform,” the statement said.”

Seeing as Goggle sold off loss leader Motorola Mobility… That explains one side of the situation.
Lenovo probably demanded that Google settle the lawsuits as part of the purchase deal. Google then goes to Apple and says, “What will it take to make this go away?” I wouldn’t bet against some cash changing hands and the “working together” part may be just a face saving way to say, “We’ve agreed that neither of us will ever try to use SEP patents as leverage again.”
Sounds very plausible.
Patent reform certainly is an issue in the United States in particular. Something needs to be done to protect patent holders from frivolous lawsuits. I’m glad to see Apple doing something positive in that area.
Having said that, I’m still of the opinion that Google should be nuked. They are evil and can never be trusted. Tim Cook needs to remember that at some point he will have to wear the Don Corleone hat. Strike when Google least expects it. My motto is never forget, never forgive and always get even. My enemies have always known that I’m coming they just don’t know when. And there’s nothing they can do to stop it. Sometimes in life you have to do what is necessary. It’s nothing personal it’s just business.

Patent filings is the real issues. Too many half baked concepts are being granted patents. This applies to everyone including Apple.
Why would Google want to sue after selling Motorola? Why would Apple sue a company that no longer owns Motorola unless SEP patents remain and Apple finally got a decent price for them?
Google retained the patents however; Levno have access and rights to the patents in perpetuity.
Well, something like that, in general, without too much grey in the picture.
In the end, none of these agreements will really matter. When they deem the time is right, China will pull a Fellowes on Apple, and that as they say will be that.
