Apple and Google agree to drop some old Motorola patent infringement lawsuits

“Nearly two dozen patent suits and countersuits between Motorola and Apple that date back to 2010 have been dropped,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“Apple and Google did not agree to cross license each others technologies, and they didn’t agree to not sue each other,” P.E.D. reports. “The issues that caused Steve Jobs to call Android a ‘stolen product’ remain thorns in both company’s sides.”

“In a joint statement on Friday, the companies said the settlement does not include a cross license to their respective patents,” Levine reports. “Apple and Google have also agreed to work together in some areas of patent reform,” the statement said.”

  1. Good. Those were old and not really the meat of the problem. Now Apple can focus even more with Slavish Copying Convicted POS Samsung and Backstabbing Do More Evil Google.

  2. Lenovo probably demanded that Google settle the lawsuits as part of the purchase deal. Google then goes to Apple and says, “What will it take to make this go away?” I wouldn’t bet against some cash changing hands and the “working together” part may be just a face saving way to say, “We’ve agreed that neither of us will ever try to use SEP patents as leverage again.”

  3. Patent reform certainly is an issue in the United States in particular. Something needs to be done to protect patent holders from frivolous lawsuits. I’m glad to see Apple doing something positive in that area.
Having said that, I’m still of the opinion that Google should be nuked. They are evil and can never be trusted. Tim Cook needs to remember that at some point he will have to wear the Don Corleone hat. Strike when Google least expects it. My motto is never forget, never forgive and always get even. My enemies have always known that I’m coming they just don’t know when. And there’s nothing they can do to stop it. Sometimes in life you have to do what is necessary. It’s nothing personal it’s just business.

    1. “I’m still of the opinion that Google should be nuked.”
Oh yes yes yes yes Americans, please nuke as much of America as possible you’ll be doing the free civilized world a huge favor.

A nice civil war, would ensure that Americans would win. Hey that’s something.

        1. I don’t do meds. I leave that for the real sickos who suggest that people get nuked. Of course I play along with them, hey you want to mess with some that goes to a public forum and says “oooh we should nuke we should nuke we should nuke.” uh no way, if some guy says he wants to nuke surrrrrrrre, you just nod and agree until the guys in the white coats come to take him away…

Unless he’s American of course, if that’s the case head for the underground.

        2. mmmmmmmmmm yeah, maybe you don’t understand that everything said or printed isn’t to be taken literally. As in Steve Jobs and his “thermonuclear war” comment. But he was serious with his anger and so am I. And as for your problems with Americans? Sounds to me like you’re jealous. And who gives a shit?

        3. Tit for tat except for the fact that the US is the only country to have used nukes on civilian populations so always a bit of a concern when that thermonuclear war idea comes up, even from Steve Jobs, but I guess he’s not a worry any more in those regards.

Hey, I don’t have a problem with Americans. If they want to be an uncivilized wannabe terroristic nation, it’s their free will. That sounds of the green dragon, I’d get that checked, could be delusional.

Insofar as who gives a shit, every living creature does. I’m surprised you did not know it. Are you constipated?

  4. Why would Google want to sue after selling Motorola? Why would Apple sue a company that no longer owns Motorola unless SEP patents remain and Apple finally got a decent price for them?

  5. In the end, none of these agreements will really matter. When they deem the time is right, China will pull a Fellowes on Apple, and that as they say will be that.
