“When it comes to the bevy of Apple HDTV rumors that seasonally spring up, Steve Jobs’ quote about “finally cracking the HDTV puzzle” is often referenced as proof positive that an Apple-branded television is in the works,” Yoni Heisler reports for TUAW. “The passage in question, taken from Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs bio, reads as follows: ‘I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,’ he told me. ‘It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.’ No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. ‘It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.'”
“What isn’t often referenced, for some peculiar reason, is an interview Isaacson conducted with CNET a few weeks after Jobs’ death. During the course of the interview, Isaacson contextualized Jobs’ remarks about finally cracking the puzzle of an integrated TV set,” Heisler reports. “Q: ‘How far along were they on the TV? Did you get any indication of that when talking to Jobs?’ Isaacson: ‘They weren’t close at all. He told me it was very theoretical. These were theoretical things they were thinking about in the future.'”
Heisler reports, “As it stands today, there’s remains no convincing shred of evidence that Apple is currently working to release an HDTV anytime soon.”

If the beleaguered Tim Cook had even one clue about what he was doing, Steve’s vision would have become reality long ago with the result being an Apple television set in every home that that has a television set.

well then can they fix apple tv then. better remote, easier way to type in search, apps, play external files through usb, built in tuner with recorder, better interface. dont get me wrong i love my apple tv, i just know it could be so much more.
According to well placed sources they have some very smart people working on it. People much smarter than would make sense if it were only for maintenance/routine improvements. (talking about the box, not an actual TV).
I use my Apple V every day, but it sure needs some work. Error messages such as “Can’t connect to (null)” in a consumer product are unacceptable. Especially when simply trying it again “fixes” the problem.

First Apple saw the GUI (graphic user interface) as the future of computing.
Next, Apple brought the world TUI (touch user interface) with Multi-touch iDevises as the future of computing.
As stated by Apple, VUI (voice user interface) or Siri will be the third milestone in computing.
I don’t think Apple will invent MUI (mind user interface) any time soon… but my Apple HDTV would welcome it for sure.

What I would expect “m”, is Siri to appear to some degree on a new Apple TV-HD model.
Possibly allowing iOS apps and game apps storable to perhaps an external media port (USB3) for content. Perhaps Apple TV-HD can access, your previous purchases of iOS apps and without downloading them, can stream the code on the fly so the app never really needs downloading. Nor would we need a HD or personal Cloud drive. But who knows.
