“Apple will launch the iPhone 5C 8GB model in India by early June to shore up volumes and bump its average selling price,” Writankar Mukherjee reports or The Times of India. “The product was first launched in Europe and China a little over a month ago and is yet to hit the shelves in the US.”
“The model, which Apple believes will help it gain share in the Rs 30,000-40,000 smartphone segment dominated by Samsung and Sony, is likely to be priced at around Rs 35,000-Rs 37,000 with a buyback offer that could bring this down to around Rs 30,000, according to four people who are local trade partners of the Cupertino-based company,” Mukherjee reports. “That would make it about Rs 2,000 cheaper than the 16GB version with a buyback offer. ”
Mukherjee reports, “Apart from gaining market share, the latest move from Apple is also aimed at increasing its ASP in India, which is among the lowest due to the higher sales of entry-level models such as the iPhone 4 and 4S leading to a cascading effect on global financials. ”

When the next iPhone lineup is released, the iPhone 5c becomes the new FREE with contract option, in the U.S. and other major markets that use the carrier subsidy model. It will probably be 8GB.
You and Apple haven’t heard carriers are moving away from these plans to financing phones for their customers. Furthermore customers are keeping their longer.
Whether that actually happens or not, it’s not happening in the next six months. We are talking about the iPhone 5c, not some future iPhone (five years from now), after this imagined transition to paying full price up front happens (or does not happen).
Also, you make it sound like subsidizing is a bad deal for the carrier; they want to “move away” from the practice. If customers ARE keeping their smartphones longer, that is precisely why carriers will want to continue to offer subsidies. Those customer are paying their recurring monthly fee, which includes collecting back for the subsidy, and they keep paying it after the contract expires. That’s GREAT news for the carrier. It’s like someone with an auto loan who keeps paying the monthly payment AFTER the loan is paid off.
Personally, I buy a used iPhone and use it with a low cost carrier plan.
