New sunglasses with iBeacon notify you when lost, act as beacons in retail

“The first set of eye glasses with embedded iBeacon Bluetooth LE technology and certified under Apple’s Made-for-iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) program are coming soon,” Jordan Kahn reports for 9to5Mac.

“A company called Tzukuri is about to launch a crowd funding project for the new eye glasses that use an embedded iBeacon to track lost glasses within a foot,” Kahn reports. “They also use solar power, so charging is never an issue, and the company has big plans for using the product as a standalone iBeacon when on store shelves.”

“Retail stores have been installing iBeacons in order to beam offers, product info, and more to shoppers in proximity, but it’s possible the product– in this case the Tzukuri glasses– could talk directly to the customer,” Kahn reports. “The company did confirm there are ‘big plans on using the embedded iBeacons inside the glasses when our product is sold in retail environment.'”

  1. As a consumer that loves Apple products, I still don’t see the killer implementation of iBeacons that compels me to kill my battery by keeping BT running on my phone. This sounds like a great tool for marketers, but I need less noise/distraction from my phone, not more.

    1. Well, this particular application doesn’t require BT to be running all the time, only when you can’t find your glasses.
And I like these glasses, some nice styles there, in fact my regular glasses are gold-framed RayBan Lennons with Rx lenses in, and I have another pair with faux Tortoiseshell frames just like the ones in the feature.
This is useful tech, I like it a lot.

    2. BlueTooth does not kill the battery on iPhones. The whole point of BT is that it’s an ultra low power technology and the iPhone was designed to work with BT on. The amount of power used by BT in a day is insignificant compared to even a brief use of the cellular radio system.

iBeacons use tiny button cells as their power source and operate for a year on that battery, but they have BT always on as otherwise they would be utterly pointless.

  2. Im not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up! I’ll go ahead and bookmark your site to come back later. Cheers cefagdbagfga
