The Verge reports:
Apple’s new CarPlay integrates your iPhone with your car’s entertainment system, giving you quick access to the things you need most when driving in a familiar interface. The company is demoing it at the New York International Auto Show this week, and we got a look at how it will work in upcoming vehicles from Volvo, Hyundai, and Mercedes Benz.

Man I’m sorry but that interface just doesn’t look good…
So says MS Sync boy. Really? It looks fantastic. I can’t wait to get that. I’ve got a high-end Pioneer now, and I just really can’t stand it. CarPlay will be awesome from what I’ve seen so far.
I’ve never used Sync before so I’m not familiar with how it operates. Based on the videos this just doesn’t look fluid.
Looks great to me, the simplicity on of the icons makes sense hear and everything looks clear, logical, smooth and generally classy, a different world from the clunky, inconsistent ugly interfaces we have had to suffer till now. Overall a great 1st attempt that will improve further from experience. Really don’t understand the criticisms from some, but as they never seem to make specific criticisms just intangible generalisations, I rather doubt the objectivity of many.
My criticism was very precise. Perhaps your reading was not? Fluidity meaning transitions in and out of the UI without stutter or lag. What’s hard to understand about this mate?
I completely agree with you, it’s not a great product. Most implementations of in-dash systems are complete failures. It will take time for them to mature, including CarPlay. Speaking of mature, let’s talk about the garish CarPlay interface.
It looks like crap. Steve jobs would never have allowed this abomination to leave Cupertino. If anyone had any doubt as to how firm a grip Steve had on his company, with him gone, and releases like this, iOS7, the color selection for the 5c, all doubts are gone. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come.
I disagree. It’s a good interface for use in a car because the background is black ( less distracting at night ), the icons and functionality are familiar to iPhone users while the defocus effect makes it obvious that those fuzzy icons are not relevant at that moment.
It just seems bizarre when CarPlay is offered as part of a complete navigation system, rather than as an option instead of a built-in navigation system. If you want to use CarPlay, you have to buy an entire navigation and voice control system that you might never want to use.
Auto companies don’t want to lose sales on navigation, so if you want a panel display you pay for it.
I hope Bose does a retrofit for my older Escalade.
No inovation here…. What, best car interface and better than the built in features? No. Is it available on the Samsung plastic Android phones? No. So, use the built in system or get an iPhone?
Anyone seeing the future yet. How about my question, “Does this car offer the CarPlay option?”
I recently rented a Toyota Highlander with a navigation system and bluetooth. It sync’d to my iPhone 5 flawlessly and used the car’s audio system to interact with Siri. I had only to ask Siri for directions to anywhere and immediately get Siri turn-by-turn directions. Between directions from Siri the system played my music from my iPhone, and automatically broke in when a Siri instruction was due, then returned to my music. Siri also placed calls and created appointments flawlessly.
The only shortcoming was that the maps were not displayed on the car’s display screen. If Car-Play brings that feature then I’d be a buyer of the system in an instant. This is the future people, and there are roughly 50 million new cars sold in the US every year.
And in 2012 Apple sold 125 million iPhones
No shortages of people who want this, and are prepared, there is no question

The chart you referenced is showing Adjusted Annualized Sales Rate for North American vehicles. NOT monthly sales figures. The way that chart works – they take sales for this year so far, divide by the number of months so far, then multiple by 12 to come up with an estimate for sales for the year. March was a good month for the “Big 8”, so the estimate rose.
I am a supplier to the North American Automotive Market – I would LOVE it if they were selling 15 million vehicles per month! On the other hand, there would be no way for us to keep up with them at that pace!
Actually, 50 million is about right for world-wide production. Apple is not limited to selling Car-Play in the US.

The above video about iOS in the car finishes playing. A very Apple-looking ad begins to play, oh kewl. Except IT’S A NOKIA AD. Where do they get these knucklehead marketing dum-dums? Poorly done, The Verge.
I find the interface ok, but the decision to not override identical functions will result in a more crowded UI and possibly be a big cause of activating the ‘wrong’ app.. Perhaps an option to hide the ‘unwanted’ version of duplicated features would be a good future update to CarPlay.
*groan* I just watch a local syndicated news cast about CarPlay that ALSO interviewed a dodgy looking Google sales rep who waggled around while informing us that Google is also planning to offer an Android equivalent of CarPlay.
