“Japan’s Sony Corp and Chinese technology company Lenovo Group are in talks about a possible joint venture to take over Sony’s loss-making Vaio PC business overseas, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday,” Reuters reports.
“The Japanese electronics and media giant called the report inaccurate while acknowledging that it was looking at various possibilities for the unit,” Reuters reports. “‘Sony continues to address various options for the PC business, but the press report on a possible PC business alliance between Sony and Lenovo is inaccurate,’ the company said in a statement.”
Reuters reports, “Moody’s Investors Service cut Sony’s debt rating to junk status last week, highlighting challenges in its television and PC businesses and pressure on profitability at its entire core consumer electronics operation.”

It’s true in real life, too.
As the pool of Windows offerings and interest shrinks in size? True or not I think it a matter of a very short amount of time before Sony gets out of that dying boat anchor business.
Sony is loosing business, because Samsung copied them. Although Sony laptops are nice, they cost too much. Apple has sucked all the air at the high end. Samsung and Vimeo sucked all the air out of the low end.
There’s nothing left for them.
I’ve always liked Sony Vaio’s… As a way to make an Apple laptop purchase look better for someone brainwashed that they have to buy a Windows box. It always helped take away some of the “Mac’s are more expensive” out of the discussion. I’d be sorry to see them go, it’s been a useful product for my purposes. 🙂
Seems to me. That when Steve came back to Apple, he pointed to VIAO as the laptop to beat. It’s ironic that they’re on the skids now.

Last week, Lenovo said it would buy Google Inc’s Motorola Mobility handset unit for $2.91 billion, the fourth-largest U.S. acquisition by a Chinese or Hong Kong company ever, to face off against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc in the smartphone market.
If it concerns the industry then it concerns Apple. Get over it.
Sony should have pre-installed Ubuntu onto those Vaios. Ubuntu is starting to end up like a good media OS, but for those who don’t have the money for a Mac, and are tired of MS’s BS. Sony should have at least made their own OS, they could have based it on the PS3 software. Those were pretty OK computers too. (Obviously they couldn’t match up to a Mac, but they were pretty good for being Windows machines…)
Don’t see the reason why Lenovo would buy or need Sony PC and laptop business, they own IBM. One of the few things Sony has is the blu ray player tech and patents that would be worth getting hold of, the rest is not worth it
Lenovo does not own IBM. They bought the ThinkPad division. IBM is still around as a thriving mainframe services company.
