Apple lining up A8 processor suppliers for Q2

“Supply chain news out of Taiwan today states that Amkor Technology and STATS ChipPAC have each obtained 40% of the total packaging orders placed by Apple for its next-generation A8 processor,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple, “with the remaining 20% will be taken over by Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE).”

“Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is believed to have landed foundry orders for Apple’s next-generation A8 chip,” Purcher reports, “will start ramping up production using 20nm process technology for Apple’s A8 chip in the second quarter of 2014.”

    1. I wonder where the parade ground that this companies were lined up is?
Did Tim Cook and his team from Apple inc. inspect the guard of honour and then decide who was the best presented?
Samsung missed the parade as they were busy cosying up to to “Do No Evil”, you know Crookle!
What a shame! yeah! right!! 🙂

  1. As my next iPhone is going to be a 6, I’m really looking forward to seeing what the performance of the A8 turns out to be, quite apart from actual appearance and other features.

  2. Please don’t have Samscum make any of these. Also TMSC could be a potential buy for Apple since they seem like a well run company and able to keep ahead of the curve in tech advances.

    1. Apple products have never been successfully “copied”. That would be too expensive. Other companies make cheap inferior imitations, which of course the intelligent user should easily distinguish. Apple’s bigger problem might be that customers expect it to be first to market with a new product category, and Cook isn’t playing that game. Cook seems to prefer to let other companies introduce the “smart watch”, the “phablet”, the convertible netbook, the DVR, business machines, and so forth … and then choose to not compete in any of these areas.

      1. I don’t think splatt was criticizing Apple so much as he was pointing out that the A8 chip won’t need to be more powerful until software makers catch up with the A7. There is plenty of work for Apple to do in other areas.

  3. The A8 processor will be immediately considered as an inferior processor to Nvidia’s Tegra K1 with its 192 CUDA cores of Playstation 3-level fury. Naturally, it will go into every Android smartphone and tablet selling for half the price of comparable Apple devices and will be claimed to be an immediate threat to Apple entire mobile business. Apple’s future will be seen as even more uncertain by Wall Street. This is what Apple shareholders have to listen to every few weeks. Apple needs to take a big chunk of its reserve cash and simply attempt to destroy Google’s search engine business. Unfortunately, Tim Cook is a wet noodle CEO and will let Google and Samsung continue to dump all over Apple.

  4. I don’t know a lot about the manufacturing of silicon chips, but this story refers to the packing orders.

Could it be that they are talking about who gets to embed the chips within the plastic housings ?

It sounds to me as though the chips might be fabricated at a foundry ( TMSC, Intel, Samsung etc ) and different companies actually package them into recognisable CPUs.
