Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer calls on Obama administration to provide greater U.S. NSA transparency

“Marissa Mayer, Yahoo Inc.’s chief executive, called on the Obama administration to provide greater transparency on the data collected by the U.S. National Security Agency,” Rebecca Blumenstein reports for The Wall Street Journal.

“‘We need to be able to rebuild trust with our users, not only in the U.S. but internationally,’ said Ms. Mayer, who was on a panel with other tech CEOs at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting at Davos,” Blumenstein reports.

“She said that greater ‘transparency’ would allow Yahoo to let users know which data the NSA is collecting,” Blumenstein reports. “‘People don’t now [sic] what data is being collected and how it is being used,’ said Ms. Mayer.”

  1. Marissa, Marissa, Marissa. I don’t know where to start. Well, for a start let me compliment you on your looks. You look gorgeous as always. Not as gorgeous as my iOS 6 icons but certainly without a shadow of a doubt more gorgeous than the iOS 7 icons and for sure blonder and more gorgeous than Jony Ive.

With that out of the way, can I ask you to improve your Yahoo Mail. I prefer it to Gmail because Google totally f***ed up Gmail lately due to its insistence of tying everything in to Google+ which is a shitty move. But let’s get back to Yahoo Mail shall we? Oh yes, please make Yahoo Mail play nice with OS X Mavericks Mail. I’m getting quite a few errors connecting to your IMAP server. Strangely enough yours is the only error message I get. OS X Mail plays nice with iCloud mail and Gmail.

And furthermore, I know that Google bought Sparrow Mail and the development team has stopped work on the OS X app, but I’m getting a lot of error messages on Yahoo Mail on my Sparrow Mail too. So please, Marissa, do look into how your IMAP is set up and get back to me when it’s fixed, ok?

    Mucho, mucho kisses.

  2. She’s not really a good poster girl for transparency. Screwed up Yahoo Mail and Flickr, without any warning, explanation, apology or discussion with the users. Her staff aren’t allowed to help the users with the missing functionality either. We don’t know when things are going to be changed back to the way they were before.

    1. The other thing: “‘People don’t now [sic] what data is being collected and how it is being used,’ said Ms. Mayer.”

We don’t know what data Yahoo is collecting about us and how it is being used.

  3. The problem with most of corporate America is they are only too happy to spy on you and then SELL that info to the government. They are opposed to the NSA spy on the whole world thing because it hurts their business.

If a private citizen did what data miners and online companies are doing to an individual it would be called stalking. When they do it to everybody it is treated like a legitimate business.

Some of the biggest buyers of data and online tracking info are various government agencies- some of which are forbidden by law to collect such data. If they are not supposed to collect it – they should not be able to buy it.

  4. Dear Marissa: Please join We The People in demanding that President Obama END mass surveillance of US citizens on US soil OR face IMPEACHMENT.

The Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution, the one that our ‘Constitutional Scholar’ of a President apparently can’t read or understand:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
    – Theodore Roosevelt, Kansas City Star (7 May 1918)

    1. Wonderful sentiment, Derek. Except your Republican party leanings are showing. I am sure that surveillance of US citizens was not invented by the current president. And the Teddy Roosevelt quote is a hoot. Cannot tell you how many folks would tell me how it was un-American to criticize the Pres. back when Bush 2 was president.

        1. I wasn’t aware of mass surveillance of US citizens within the USA during Clinton. I keep hearing it happened but have never read about it. As for George II, I did indeed know AND I spoke up about it as soon as I knew. Before Apple took away the .Mac web space, I used to have a recording made in Buffalo, NY of George II LYING to an audience that the US government would ‘never surveil US citizens without a warrant’. It turned out that he had already been doing so for years. When his deceit became public knowledge I would point people to the recording of his lie.

IOW: I have no respect for either Republicans or Democrats at this point. Bought, sold, puppetted, worthless.

  5. What’s with this childish tendency to label everyone who dares to disagree with your ‘blessed’ opinion as a troll? My understanding of ‘troll’ in regard to internet forums is that of someone who deliberately makes statements designed to inspire flame wars. In regards to Mr. Currie above, who laughs at my labelling him a Republican, it cannot be denied that his statements regarding the current president hew very closely to all the veiled talking points that are trotted out with respect to the President. As for who is being a dick or a troll, I bow to his superior talents in both respects.
Remind me again who instigated the Patriot Act?
“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” Ben Franklin
