    1. Wonderful for China Mobile, yes. This is all very curious. My guess is that the deal hasn’t been solidified and this is part of the bargaining process.

It allows China Mobile to test demand. Apple won’t say anything until a deal is signed. If it does, China Mobile threatens to walk and Apple has to cough up to demands or be blamed on wall street for the deal falling through.

My guess is that China Mobile wanted this news out as a rumour so as to see Wall Street react. If there’s a jump in the stock price, China Mobile uses that as a bargaining chip.

Essentially, they are trying to hold as many cards as possible. This is standard business practice in China.

  1. I read all the comments on the article at CNN. Wow, what intelligent comments there. Go look. Not a single political clown. No complaints about iOS 7. No liberal/conservative crap. No insulting of others. Why can’t MDN readers be like that?

  2. who’s gonna assemble all those extra iPhones. is foxconn really gonna do all that cuz i thought it was quite tough, already. i do hope apple can one day innovate its micro-electronics technology away from the tin market. i hear people making a lot of squabble about that issue originating from indonesia and into shenmao technology and cheman metal industrial for solder. that would really be revolutionary if circuit boards were replaced with particles of crystal and shoe leather. or whatever. i have no idea what i’m talking about.

  3. My guess is that Apple, and perhaps China Mobile, would like the initial several million sales to fall in the beginning of next quarter rather than the end of this one. It would be easier to meet demand after the first, as well.

After years of talks, Apple confirmed on Sunday that it has at long last reached a deal with China Mobile to officially carry the iPhone.

China Mobile will start selling the iPhone 5s and 5c starting on Jan. 17, with pre-orders starting this Wednesday.

“Apple’s iPhone is very much loved by millions of customers around the world,” China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua said in a statement. “We know there are many China Mobile customers and potential new customers who are anxiously awaiting the incredible combination of iPhone on China Mobile’s leading network. We are delighted that iPhone on China Mobile will support our 4G/TD-LTE and 3G/TD-SCDMA networks, providing customers with high-speed mobile service.”

Apple Tim Cook said he is excited to begin working with China Mobile.
