“Here’s a new concept video for the next iPhone that takes thinness to an extreme,” Roger Cheng reports for CNET.
“The video from Set Solution offers its take on a theoretical “iPhone Air,” and another envisions an iPhone 6C (the C here stands for curve, not color),” Cheng reports. “The videos offer some beautiful renderings, particularly of the imagined iPhone Air, which it posits would be 1.5 millimeters thin at the top and 3 millimeters thick at the bottom, weigh 70 grams, and feature an edge-to-edge glass display.”

Intriguing, but stupid concept. The shape is technologically impossible; screen borders are too thin (you have to have control wiring for the matrix at the edges).
There is meaning in the “industrial design” part of Jonathan Ive’s title. Jonathan understands industry and technology, he does not come with nonsensical designs.
what if the curve is about keeping these important “edges” inside the machine, with the “control wiring for the matrix” concealed inside the housing….. due to bent glass…. are you thiniking inside the box or what! (?)

You can not conceal the edges this way. Besides, bent glass in this way does not make sense and, as I wrote, makes technically infeasible to produce the phone.

iPhone is and always was pragmatical design. Curviness in the way as depicted is a marketing gimmick which could not be made — it has no feature for users, nor it feasible to manufacture unless the size of device will be giant.
Must admit pretty ugly and you are right curved that direction makes little sense for a phone. The whole phone would need to curve to even look elegant and that’s not considering practicalities involved.
once again, if the phone looked like it does, with no edge because all the circuitry is in the sides of the display that goes down into the device, covered by liquid metal case, then edge to edge display is possible. Remember, a right angle is just a very tight “curve”, and would enable the holy grail of full on experience with no seams, the view on the screen would meld with the outside world with no edges to separate the phone from the other experience we call life.

And here is the why? I would rather be thicker with more battery life per charge. What is gained by being curved or ultra thin?

Nice design fantasies, but the phone display, electronics, connectors, and batteries actually require a little volume…
It may eventually be possible to reach this goal. We have all witnessed Apple perform miracles of miniaturization, only to follow up in successive years with further size and weight reductions. But these concept videos take thinness to an extreme at the expense of credibility. These videos have no substance – they are simply advertising for Set Solution. Mission accomplished. Vaporware promoted.
I can make that right now with scotch tape, cardboard, and an HP inkjet

If you curve your phone, it needs to solve a problem. Is there a particular problem that a curved phone can help? Not that I can think of.
Any problems that are solvable by a curved phone, will cause additional problems elsewhere. IE: Curve phone to fit in your pants pocket, screws up the fit in your shirt pocket or even coat pocket.
A phone (so thin as the air concept) has integrity and stability issues. Touch ID needs space to hold the sensors. Room for battery, etc.
I would rather see technology develop for edge to edge displays, keeping the width and depth consistent, with past models.

The only way you’d get a phone that thin is by all the components being directly soldered into one board, including the battery.
And all those components would have to be even smaller than they are now.
Fugly and it doesn’t seem at all practical. I personally think Apple has achieved a thin enough level on iPhones and iPads but that’s just my point of view. I would figure each attempt to make the next model thinner would drive up costs, not in materials but R&D just to save a few ounces. It doesn’t seem worth it. I’d prefer a thicker and heavier device with a longer battery life if a compromise had to be made.
Losing the ugly hangover at each end somewhat would be my priority rather than further thinness and lighter when practical
I don’t think I’ve seen one of these in 10 years that has enough likeness to Apple’s vision, design, style, look —whatever—to even *remotely* create the feeling of excitement / energy that actual Apple product introductions create.
I always seem to come away with the feeling that while the people who come up with them have some strength, be it designing objects, object animation, or maybe some Apple-ish imagination…they lack so much in some other area the final product does little for me.
Where are the people who have a great Apple perspective and design know how and…taste? Don’t tell me their ALL at Apple…there’s gotta be a couple talents on this blog that could guess a better Apple product than this wannabe baloney.

Please stop posting these stupid concept videos where the only “concept” is to make it thinner (or curved) without any conceptualization of the engineering that’s going to make it happen. They’re pointless. “1.5mm thin”… that’s stupid, why not make it .1mm thin?
This is the most plausible use of a curved design that Apple is likely to deliver in the near future…
