“Apple isn’t known for discount sales, so when it has one, it’s news,” Arik Hesseldahl reports for AllThingsD. “Today, in a promotional email, Apple unveiled its Black Friday deals, available on its online store and at its retail stores around most of the world. If you buy an iPad, Mac or iPod, you get an Apple gift card worth between $50 and $150.”
“Of course, the Apple Store isn’t the only place you can get the iPad today. Retailers Walmart and Target have already announced this morning that iPads are among the biggest selling items at their holiday sales — at Target; the iPad Air was the top draw; at Walmart, it was the iPad mini,” Hesseldahl reports. “In both cases, those stores used discounts announced on the night before Thanksgiving to generate foot traffic. Both trimmed the price on an iPad Air by $20. And today, Target is offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of any full-size iPad, basically dropping the starting price to $379. Best Buy is offering the iPad Air for between $50 and $70 off, depending on model.”

If I had a kid (and thank doG I don’t) I would not be giving him or her something as pointlessly superfluous as this. I would give the little urchin an encyclopedia or a dictionary, maybe some clothes too (but not by Dolce and Gabbanna for sure!) Kids need to be disaplined these days, and not showerd with useless toys. Today’s parents are soft, and aren’t like the no-nonsense parents of the good ol’ days. Whatever happened to respect and being thankful for what you got?

How am I shortsighted? I only speak the truth. My generation was the last generation to understand the meaning of hard work, and perseverance. Today’s generation seems so spoiled and entitled, and this isn’t what I grew up with. I had strict parents, but they still loved me. They did not want me to have bad influences, and, as someone who grew up in the Bronx in the 1980s, I was glad for it.
There were much fewer people in your generation, with less access to information and technology. So while your friends and acquaintances may have been diligent and hardworking, I’m sure there was a whole lot of delinquent youths you probably we’re not exposed to because of the lack of awareness. And I would not get on a soapbox about your generation being diligent and hardworking. When last I checked, your terrible fiscal policies, war mongering, and outright expectation of social inequalities have not been a boon for America. I rather live in this generation where people understand and appreciate we are all different and work toward living in peace and harmony. There will always be slackers and dead beat parents in any generation!
Spoiled and entitled indeed is today’s generation, but encyclopedia Britanica is out of business in favor of interactive alternatives… iPad is no toy, it’s the ultimate learning and education alternative . Not seeing that makes you very shortsighted.
I agree in that useless toys are not at the top of the Xmas list for my kids. However, the iPad of today replaces the dictionary and encyclopedia of your day. It is teaching my toddler about shapes an colors, and my kindergarten we to read. Its up to parents to keep their kids from turning the iPad into useless toys.
I don’t mean to sound like a strict babysitter, but it seems like the traditional childhood is going the way of the Windows PC. When I was young, after watching an hour of Saturday Morning ‘Toons, my mom would take me on a trip to Central Park. I just loved going there every weekend, and it seems like technology is making today’s kids grow up too fast. You only have one childhood, never take it for granted…
You have a valid problem with useless parents. That scourge has nothing to do with technology.
If I had a bratty teen shit, I’d buy some of the things on their wish list and proceed to donate them, just to see the look on their face and the tantrum they throw when they find out some “less than worthy” poor kid got “their” iPod or what-the-fuck-ever instead of them. Making them volunteer and sling soup on X-mess is a nice thing to do since so many people are greedy assholes that just take take take and never give back, but they probably won’t learn anything from it except that Mom’s a mean bitch who made the family feed homeless strangers on Christmas.
My daughter has saved hard for half a year for an iPad mini. She plans not to use it as a toy but as a tool, she already does large parts of her homework on the gen 1 we share as a family. My wife and I are proud to go halves with her uncle on the difference between what she’s saved and a Mini with Retina display.
How about access to encyclopedia and dictionaries via iPad? And at the same time access to many other educational sources in a much more compact package…😎🎓👍

If the kids of this generation are spoiled brats, that speaks volumes of the parenting capabilities of my generation.
One thing that I find very unusual this year are that there are no dozens of articles claiming how the Kindle Fire is going to threaten Apple’s tablet sales this year. I remember last year that was a really big rally cry until Kindle Fire sales didn’t turn out as high as expected. I know it wasn’t Jeff Bezos saying that (he loves keeping Kindle sales hush-hush) but there was some undercurrent of lowered Kindle Fire expectations. This year, not a peep out of anyone about the Kindle Fire HDX possibly outselling the iPad. Maybe it’s still too early to frighten away Apple investors.
Amazon should have stayed with the original Kindle, IMO. That was what they did best: Sell eBooks. They should have stuck with what they were doing instead of making an iPad clone.
