“Apple has been doing very well in Japan for years,” Stasys Bielinis reports for Unwired View. “And now that country’s biggest mobile operator – NTT DoCoMo – started carrying iPhone 5S and 5C, it is doing even better.”
“According to Kantar World Panel, 76% of new smartphones sold in October were iPhones,” Bielinis reports. “Including 61% on NTT DoCoMo.”
“Phone always performed best in carrier controlled and heavily subsidized markets, where the average Joe can see little difference between buying $650 iPhone and $400 Android phone with a traditional two year contract,” Bielinis reports. “But the amount of interest it is now generating in Japan, is simply amazing.”

Why not 100% if it’s so good?
Well, because the other 24% are like you.
Either poor, or clueless.
You are perilously close to .me. Oh well, MDN doesn’t allow me to register .me. Confused? .me too! 🙂
HA! Great Response!!
There are a lot of South Koreans in Japan. I blame K-Pop.
There are also a lot of North Koreans in Japan too.
Why not 110% about as possible
It would have been 200% if it hadn’t been running the truly shiteous iOS 7.
fuck off
That’s the level of the average Apple user these days – dumb, stupid and monosyllabic.
Not all Apple users are monosyllabic.
I say Bollocks 😉
Your name says it all.
Japanesse people are smart, very smart, at least 76 percent of them!
They bow to no one.
Wired and that Tool who wrote that hit piece and ruined the rep of a writer there is a POS and sooooo wrong!
Bull. Everyone knows the Japanese hate iPhones because there’s no place they can hook a Miss Kitty hand-strap to.

The traditional Galapagos keitai is good as dead thanks to Softbank hanging in there all those years and selling the iPhone. Those other carriers had a solid lock on subscribers with hundreds of exclusive tiers of features for their own feature phones. The iPhone was one nail the Japanese couldn’t hammer down. That’s so amusing.
The iHaters should fall on their swords for spreading so much FUD against the iPhone. I honestly don’t understand why the news media is always trying to defame Apple.
Thank you for remembering to include the sarcasm tag. 🙁
I presume you meant Hello Kitty. Miss Kitty ran a saloon and whore house in Gunsmoke.
People love to make fun of the Hello Kitty franchise in the same ways that they do with Apple, even to the point of having specialised Haters. Both groups are of the “don’t get it” variety, and exhibit the personality of bedbugs.
Both franchises date back to the mid-1970s, are storied successes, and provide convenient targets for persons too clever by half about business matters, dismissive of both and either predicting their imminent demise once the fad wears off, or musing learnedly about the folly of a large segment of the unwashed masses.
The fact is that both franchises have incontrovertibly established their universal appeal. And their visceral, human connections go beyond mere merchandising: people love them.

Thank you for that link, fantastic!
Don’t let that mole & mesh stockings fool you, The Long Branch was no whore house. Miss Kitty ran an honorable saloon in Dodge City.
*sigh* you are an incurable romantic.
however, her unbridled desire for Chester resulted in his legendary limp.
Chester was NOT limp – ask Miss Kitty.
This could easily mean they double sales in Japan year-over-year. Is 70 million in a quarter unrealistic? This is absolutely nuts.
Can Apple even make 70 million phones in one quarter? In another article, it was stated Apple can produce 500,000 phones a day. That works out to 60 million phones per quarter. How many companies wish they had that problem. I wonder how many Microsoft Touch phones are made in a quarter, let alone how many of those produced are actually sold. Notice Microsoft has never gloated about their figures.
Well to be fair, that was one assembly plant turning out 500K per day. There could be other plants.
Microsoft doesn’t have to crow about their volumes since they’re the only platform with MS-Office, Home Office Edition, and that’s all that really matters.
And, yes, Apple could be selling 75M iPhones a quarter if only “Jay Morrison” was the CEO.
/s^2
I thought that 500,000 / day figure was just the 5S. So, with the 5C (and the 4S if they keep producing that), then they could easily produce 70M per quarter.
So iPhone is doing great in japan and India just recently outselling Android. China they are doing well in as well. I’m curious as to where this 80% of android users live. Antarctica?
I wouldn’t be surprised if a good chunk of those Android “activations” are embedded in appliances.
Exactly. Mark my words, one day soon the analysts will be forced to come clean about their categories. They had to do the same not long ago with tablets-as-PCs when the elephant in the server room could no longer be ignored.
Wow, and the was without a BOGO free offer.
Wait, how can that be?! I though Android and Samdung were taking over.
I’m thinking when you actually get the “sold vs shipped” numbers then the truth is exposed.
Android is taking over the low end cheapo phone business and manufacturers are losing tons of money doing it
Amazing numbers. Clearly there is a huge bump because of the 5S/5C and because of the new connection with Docomo. Nevertheless, these are monster numbers.
This basically indicates the iPhone’s market potential in the absence of Android-Samsung knock-offs. Imagine similar iPhone market share numbers in the rest of the world as Android-Samsung becomes marginalized after being found guilty of IP theft in mounting legal wins worldwide. Reminds me of iPod market share numbers in ‘the good old days’.
apple is doomed
Wow imagine if apple also gave the choice of a larger screen as well. Choice being the key.
