Jony Ive, Senior Vice President of Design at Apple and industrial designer Marc Newson discuss their (Red) collaboration at Sotheby’s on Charlie Rose.
Two of the world’s foremost design pioneers, Sir Jonathan Ive, KBE, and Marc Newson, CBE, have collaborated with musician and philanthropist Bono to organize a (RED) Auction celebrating the very best of design and innovation.
Jony and Marc have spent the past year and a half curating the collection, which comprises objects from disciplines as diverse as space travel and lighting design to contemporary art and rare automobiles, all unified and distinguished by their excellence and innovation.
Proceeds from the 23 November 2013 sale at Sotheby’s New York will benefit The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

One thing I really like about the 4s and 5s is that they both remind me of early Leica cameras. SJ said this also in one keynote. The 5s design is an improvement/refinement in design over the 4s. I really hope the battery lasts so I can keep it 3-5 years.
This post inspired me to pull my phone out of its monstrosity of a plastic case to admire it. Gorgeous! Unfortunately I have kids in the family and the phone inevitably is picked up by the little one or slid off the table by others. The case has saved me many times. But such a pity to need one when the 5s is so beautiful.
Get rid of the kids. (Just kidding.)

Only internally. Externally few people can tell them apart without close inspection.
Ive is not almost as important as Steve Jobs in Apple’s success. Design schools are full of designers that could do what either of these guys do. Besides talent, you have to get lucky enough to get the right high profile gig.
And Ive does not design the whole product. He designs the shell. Lots of designers design this stuff. The guys that make all of that technology fit into such a small profile get no love, but Ive couldn’t work his designs without THOSE designers.
Let’s give credit where credit is due. Lots of designers make these products.

Jony is a great minimalist designer of objects, he is not so great with user interface design as we have seen with iOS7 not that I have an issue with the look of iOS7 but usability is another story (So maybe Jony does’t help with that).
That’s true of nearly all designers it’s however important to heed the importance of the person who brings all those various often contentious inputs together to produce the final successful form. Only a few are able to truly exercise that control successfully.
Everyone thinks Edison was a genius but for the most part this is precisely the role he played too as an inventor making an industry of taking what others did or were requested to do and take credit for the final patented products that resulted.
