Obama’s secret attempt to ban cellphone unlocking, while claiming to support it

“Last week, WikiLeaks made public a portion of a treaty that the White House has been secretly negotiating with other nations and 600 special interest lobbyists,” Derek Khanna writes for Slate. “The draft of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Treaty, which is on intellectual property, shows that HealthCare.gov isn’t the only tech topic on which the Obama administration has some serious explaining to do.”

“The White House claims that it supports copyright reform. It should be in favor of remaking the framework, because today’s copyright system is a mess: It grants protection that is too long (70 years or more), fair use is notoriously unclear and vague, and statutory damage laws create a massive deterrent to lawful creation,” Khanna writes. “Economists and scholars argue that modern copyright, as opposed to constitutional copyright, greatly impedes innovation and content creation. But the TPP, which is being negotiated by 11 countries, would be a step in the completely wrong direction.”

“In its present state, treaty would expand copyright and effectively make real reform impossible,” Khanna writes. “Worse, it would essentially disregard constitutional limitations on copyright and reject pillars like fair use, the first-sale doctrine, and having copyright be for ‘limited times.’ The worst part: While the White House was publicly proclaiming its support of cellphone unlocking, it was secretly negotiating a treaty that would ban it.”

“This treaty has long been shrouded in unprecedented secrecy. Congressional staff, press and general public weren’t allowed to read it; in many cases, even members of Congress were kept in the dark,” Khanna writes. “Meanwhile, special interests were given full access. Now we know why: The White House didn’t want the public to know what was being negotiated in their name.”

MacDailyNews Take: Wait, average citizens — who, by the way, dutifully go to work every day to fund this whole ball of, er… wax — and many of their representatives were told one thing (or kept in the dark) while the opposite was being pursued in order to placate special interests?

Say it ain’t so.

    1. Treated like morons (the majority must be, they voted for this mess, twice) and lied to every damn day while footing the entire damnable bill.

How long will it take for U.S. citizens to wake up? Will they ever?

Oh, look, never mind that, Kim Kardashian just selfied her ass! Pay no attention to the empty-suited puppet behind the curtain.

    2. WORST-PRESIDENT-EVER
Welcome to socialism if this guy is not stopped. Sadly, The Obama Supporting TAKERS outnumber MAKERS. If you want the U.S. to be like Europe, JUST MOVE THERE. Canada can by your “Gateway Drug”.. Just leave us alone.
      WAKE UP PEOPLE.
      THIS IS THE SLIPPERY SLOPE.

      1. Yes, lets all fight over Democrat and Republican while we ignore the fact that the we are about to cook the planet. At this point we are all like frogs debating our future government in a cooking pot !

        1. Yes, lets all fight over anthropomorphic global warming* ( while we ignore the fact that the sitting U.S. President is an inexperienced liar who is about to let Iran get the bomb because he’s obsessed with taking over 1/6th of the U.S. economy and screwing up healthcare thereby killing millions of Americans by the time we fix the mess he and his ilk created.

*Global warming is phony science that was concocted to justify implementation of an international political agenda. The idea of using “man-caused global warming” as a “surrogate for war” and as a way to “destroy excess wealth” originated in American and UN-related think tanks such as the Club of Rome back in the 60′s and 70′s. This pseudo-science is the centerpiece of a phony environmental movement by which the UN hopes to redistribute wealth in the world (toward the super-rich and away from the people) to de-industrialize the industrialized countries (via the UN Kyoto Protocol-type carbon taxes, cap and trade schemes, etc.), and radically reduce the human population.

        2. I get scared for my future and my children’s future when I listen to or read something like you just put out. To believe that all of the time that it’s been done so far is pony is just plain idiotic. Please go climb in the hole and shut your trap use ignorant slut

        3. How the fuck “intelligent” can you be when you can’t even spell the word, you stupid fuck?

Warmer temperatures are largely due to natural 300-year cycles. The actual temperature increase in last 17 years lower than almost every prediction. The computer models on which the IPCC based their global warming hokum are diverging widely from reality. There has been no statistically significant increase in world average surface temperatures since the beginning of 1997, despite the models’ projection of a steeply rising trend. A large proportion of the warming that did occur in the years before temperatures failed to match the dire predictions of the global warming snake oil salesmen was due not to greenhouse gas emissions, but to a natural cyclical temperature pattern.

    3. It’s where he honed his phrase… “If you want your cell phone unlocked. You can get your cell phone unlocked. Period!”*

      * Only if your cell phone doesn’t change with new added features, like a smart phone

  1. Pay no attention. Assange is a traitorous dog. The Government is our friend and protector. These rules are just to keep us safer. If you haven’t done anything wrong, you don’t have anything to hide.

    Just about covers it, right?

  2. “If you like your” laws, intellectual property, and patents “you can keep them. Period!”

Isn’t it great, anything fits today’s federal government promises. If they say something, we are now told we should be expecting the opposite. We have 3 more years of this BS. Unless we vote for more again!

  3. “Wait, average citizens – who, by the way, dutifully go to work every day to fund this whole ball of, er… wax – and many of their representatives were told one thing (or kept in the dark) while the opposite was being pursued in order to placate special interests?”

Sounds vaguely familiar. Oh, right, it’s Obama’s modus operandi.

From the auto bailouts (placating his union backers while pretending he was “saving” GM and Chrysler instead of just delaying the end result of their endemic problems) to Obamacare (placating insurance companies – before trying to scapegoat them when the idiocy and insolvency of his stupid mess became apparrent to anyone with basic faculties – while lying outright to voters and congresspeople repeatedly in order to get it passed, barely, and to get reelected).

And Gitmo is still open, suckers.

  4. I see the conservatives are ready to jump on any news that makes the president look bad. Unfortunately for all these commenters and the Author of this story jail breaking and unlocking are two different things. The administration wants you to be able to use your phone on any carriers network (unlocking) they don’t agree with people jail breaking those devices, for many reasons IP protection, security, ect. Everyone all up in arms over this is either to incompetent to comment on the subject or they just dislikes the president so much they don’t care that his administration didn’t do or say anything wrong.

      1. The Author is mixing up two different concepts, so party affiliation doesn’t apply to the source. I can only assume you read the headline and comments, if you read what was written in the draft you would see that your comment reinforces my point.

        1. I was responding to your statement: “I see the conservatives are ready to jump on any news that makes the president look bad.”

This article is from Salon which is anything but conservative, hence your statement is false. Plenty more people than conservatives are finally critical of the abject failure that is the Obama administration. Obama doesn’t need “any news” to be jumped on in order to look bad.

        2. “Unfortunately for all these commenters and the Author of this story…”

The “Author” of this story (your strange capitalization, not mine) is Slate, a left-leaning liberal media outlet (just like Salon).

          My point stands.

        3. Fwhatever, your defensive logic is flawed.

John Appleseed commented that “…conservatives are ready to jump on any news that makes the president look bad.” That statement is true based on empirical evidence in this forum.

John Appleseed also commented that “Unfortunately for all these commenters and the Author of this story jail breaking and unlocking are two different things.” That is also a true statement and is independent of the political leanings of the commenters or author.

Your point is dull. It does not “stand” in any way, shape, or form. You refuse to accept any viewpoint but your own, or any input or evidence that contradicts your worldview.

In an attempt to deflect your knee-jerk reaction to my post, I want to state ahead of time that I have not yet established a personal position on this issue. International copyright reform is a complicated issue, and I am not willing to jump to conclusions based on a single article or a “portion of a treaty.”

    1. The POTUS, any POTUS, is not above criticism. In fact, when you are the most powerful person in the world, your every action SHOULD be evaluated.

A POTUS is not supposed to be a King or a dictator nor supposedly benign sovereign. A POTUS is supposed to be a citizen executive of one branch of the government of a commercial Republic.

In B.O.’s case, even more scrutiny is necessary, in that he has repeatedly lifted himself to an elevated status, whereby he is apparently entitled to micromanage the private health decisions of individuals, and whereby he is apparently entitled to lawlessly and repeatedly violate the Constitution of the United States of America, which he swore to uphold.

Additionally, his proven record of blatant and systematic lying to the American public puts every word and action of the POTUS under suspicion.

Those who are too cowardly to admit their abject stupidity in voting for this POS will just have to deal with every single one of these well-justified criticisms of the POTUS.

Despite the insecurities of the average self-absorbed liberal, the world really does not revolve around them. Will they ever understand that? I doubt it. Liberalism is a mental disease.

  5. One lie . . . “well, it is a misunderstanding”. Easy enough to sidestep and still support.
Two lies . . . “but, it was done for our good”. We need to stand up for our party. The other party is the real evil one.

Three lies, four, when will the naive wake up!

One major characteristic of a narcissist or narcissistic society is that they cannot accept that a problem or failure is their fault. Blame someone else or the former office holder!

  6. Hey guys and gals, just remember that Congress makes the laws for this land. The President only signs them or vetoes them. He does lobby for what he wants, but Congress makes the laws! And of course, we all know we have the Best Congressmen and Senators that money can buy.

    1. Obamacare was passed by the U.S. Senate with zero Republican votes, the U.S. House with zero Republican votes and signed into law by the Democrat Obama.

      1. No, actually, America is doing really quite well at the moment. You likely haven’t noticed.

Of course, there will always be things to do, and ways to do things better.

Unfortunately you and your obstructionist ilk are the losers in this whole thing.

Look at the cute little Avatar you created. #notclever

        Oh, and you lost, btw.

        1. “The general difference between conservatives and liberals is that liberals like pretty pictures and conservatives like to build bridges that people can drive across. And conservatives are indeed conservative because if the bridge falls down then people die, whereas the liberals figure, we can always build a nice memorial and make people forget it ever happened and was our fault. They’re very good at making people forget it was their fault.” – Tom Clancy

  7. These “secret” treaty negotiations have had press releases about issues and progress going back to Nov, 2009.

Only after the Senate approves a treaty by a 2/3 majority can the President ratify it. (Art 2 Sec 2). Democrats do not control 2/3 of the Senate, so if a treaty with bad copyright provisions passes, it falls on the President and both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate.

  8. Aside from all the political nonsense that posts here that I don’t read, this article however, does point to some interesting facts that are not fully revealed:

That corporations like our telecoms would reject the passing of the bills because they would have the most to lose. Apple would also be against this reform because Apple does not want you jailbreaking their devices. A passing of this sort of bill would make it “okay” for anyone to jailbreak or do whatever to compromise their devices. The intent is for consumers to ‘unlock’ their devices for multi national or multi carrier use and this is where it gets tricky.

  9. Republican vs. Democrat… Did You Know?

13th Amendment: Abolished slavery. 100% republican support, 23% democrat Support.

14th Amendment: citizenship to freed slaves. 94% republican support, 0% democrat support.

15th Amendment: voting rights for all. 100% republican support, 0% democrat support.

From Wikipedia: “The republican party was founded in 1854 by Northern anti-slavery activists. The main cause was opposition to slavery. The Republicans saw the expansion of slavery as a great evil. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president.”

Obamacare: 0% Republican Support, 100% Democrat Support
