Google barges to feature VIP showrooms for Google Glass, attempt to upstage Apple Retail Stores

“Google’s mysterious floating barge on San Francisco Bay will feature luxury showrooms and a party deck for the tech giant to market Google Glass and other gadgets to invitation-only clients, multiple sources told KPIX 5,” Ken Bastida reports for KPIX.

“The project, which has been in the planning stages for more than a year, was created at Google[x], the secret facility that Google reportedly runs near its corporate headquarters in Mountain View,” Bastida reports. “It is personally directed by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and is Google’s attempt to upstage rival Apple and its chain of popular retail stores, sources said.”

Bastida reports that the “interchangeable 40-foot shipping containers… can be assembled and disassembled at will, allowing [them] to be placed on barges, trucks or rail cars and taken anywhere in the world, the source said. Google could send it to a ski resort one day and then have it shipped to the beach a few days later.”

      1. what a freaking 4 minute “NON-STORY” for a lame attempt at trying to create a marketing buzz..

Big woop, Google is being secretive about a project and marketing the fact… Gee, where’d they get that idea???? Any guesses?

  1. As much as Google, the NSA, and all of the similar spying government programs breaching privacy around the world would LOVE consumers to embrace this, it’s not going to happen…

I can see Google Glass being beneficial to very few individuals with special use case scenarios that aren’t mainstream (such as the entertainment industry and to a larger degree, sports.) But given that it’s created by Google, privacy concerns may hamper it’s widespread use even in these small, (mostly) novelty markets.

Also… no one wants to pay $1,000 to look like a borg and a dork.

  2. I find nothing particularly special about this. Anyone who might attend should be ashamed supporting a company dedicated to blatant public invasion of privacy. It really seems Google’s nefarious evil end is to destroy any sense of privacy in the world. In that respect the NSA and Google are a perfect match. Let’s hope Apple counters by starting their own Search service and cutting off Google’s oxygen. Nothing I’d like more than to see the smug Page & Schmidt gasping for air.

    1. I think most are missing the point of Google Glass.

The end product will not be as geeky, and it also allows Google to develop technologies in public which become useful for other devices.

      1. I don’t care what the “point” is for GoogleGlass. It’s stupid and invasive, and I hope that people wearing them will eventually get their damned heads knocked off when they point it at the wrong person.

Perverts will be using them to walk the malls and beaches and make recording of teenaged girls for their own collection.

  3. There is already a similar product to Glass, available now, that does virtually the same thing, for a third of the price.
I believe it’s called Jet, or Jett, something of that nature.
Anyway, it’s a proper pair of sports glasses, with interchangeable lenses, and a head-up display system like Glass, but neater and more functional for sports people like racing cyclists, triathletes, cross-country runners, etc.
It begs the question, why would anyone pay that much money for something like Glass?

    1. Why have a 1000 dollar device when you can make a 300 dollar device that omits the cellular antenna and simply operates through shared wifi/AirPlay. Touch ID has more staying power as an exclusive technology than what Google is trying to do.

  4. If Google really thinks this is a good idea and is somehow going to compete with Apple Stores, or anything else, is dumping a lot of money for nothing.. They’ve really lost it. No matter how cool they think it is and the few that might agree with them, in a year or less, if it ever sails, its just going to be massively over priced barge sitting on the bay.

        1. Respect for each other is not a matter of ‘taste’ but is a much deeper value. In this public forum, we can all strive to show courtesy and decorum to all the readers by using civil, thoughtful language. Taste has nothing to do with it.

        2. You are clueless aren’t you? You attack someone by essentially calling them a “classless loser” because of a “poor choice” of vocabulary, then dare use “respect for each other.” You have no class. You are the biggest loser.

  5. Looks like they won’t be able to sell glass in millions anyway.

Every country is in the process of banning them.

Especially in a car. In the UK our driving authorities have joined with the police. If the police see someone wearing glass while driving they could be banned.

The police see it as dangerous as using your mobile phone while driving.

Also car insurance will be void if you are wearing glass while driving as well.

I’m a business owner and there is no way on earth I will be having a meeting with anyone wearing those things.

I don’t want my personal and business information recorded onto googles servers so they can sell it to my competition.

  6. Google Barge: a Titanic marketing gimmick up The River of No Return. One security slip and you’ll Walk The Plank with your data. I can’t Fathom why anyone buys Android phones designed primarily to report your online activities.to advertisers.

People are so naive and gullible. Are you sure this isn’t another episode of Giligan’s Island?

    1. On the outside. But stepping inside, you are greeted by a winking, androgynous concierge who conducts you through a murmuring room lavish in its decor and its selection of glitterati, to a waiting damask- and delicacy-covered table. Once seated, you signal for a Harvey Wallbanger from a passing waiter, who turns out to be Anthony Hopkins. You make small talk with the Kardashians at the next table, and pray that Gavin Newsom, who has just arrived, will not be seated at yours. Google Glass are being distributed from a rolling cart; you accept yours, a bit nervous. A spotlight pops on and there, standing in the exact center of the room, is Sergey. I haven’t imagined the rest yet.

  7. So it’s a stealth attack on the NSA disguised as a celebrity orgy disguised as a promotional event. Brilliant! Inspired! Who would have guessed that Sergey Brin was such a patriot and privacy advocate?

  8. A party deck?! Yes, this will show the world who the real technology leader is! Actually, Apple + Google is starting to look like a match made in heaven. Google’s party deck + Apple’s clownish iOS 7 interface = high-tech nirvana for 14-year-old girls!
