Jony Ive and Marc Newson create a sleek one-off aluminum desk

“Apple’s Jony Ive and the renowned industrial designer Marc Newson have paired to design a one-off desk,” Aaron Souppouris report for The Verge.

“Created for charity auction, the (RED) Desk is, in keeping with much of the designers’ back catalogues, machined from solid aluminum,” Souppouris report. “The influence of both designers runs through the piece, although it appears there’s a little more Newson in this desk, just as there was a little more Ive in the Leica.”

Souppouris report, “The form is definitely unique; the tabletop sits atop a pair of sculpted legs like a discarded aircraft wing, leading to a striking initial impact. Get closer to the table and a playful jigsaw-like pattern is revealed on the tabletop.”

    1. Countdown to more stupid comments such as this….8..7..6..5..

      Exactly why Ives said,

“All of us in this room see the same things, the same objects, but Marc and I see what’s behind them.”

        1. Jony Ives might be over-rated.

I mean, I get it, I get it: Smooth, clean lines; Rounded edges; No clutter; Clarity and simplicity; Stripped down to its essence, so on and so forth.

This isn’t deep stuff, and that desk is ugly.

    1. Recyclable is of course great.

Wood is also recyclable, but also renewable, lower energy in production and uses far fewer chemicals to produce.

I just think people think this is super-green, when there are in my opinion better options.

  1. Since Ive thinks we live in a two dimensional world and that 2-D is the new 3-D in iOS 7, why doesn’t he just draw a picture of table on a piece of paper, charge $1,000 for it and leave it at that.

I’m sure total idiots like Rorschach will be falling over themselves buying it and then finding out that it’s only good for TP.

  2. Too cold and sorely lacking in grace and delight for my ‘own’ taste. There is no ‘I have to have it’ feel or lusting about it when compared to a MacBook Air or a new iMac 27″. I mean, you’d have to pay me to buy it.

Well OK, everyone of us is entitled to our own taste, but you hit your shinbone against that thing when turning around, and it’ll make a man cry. Or you can wield it like a weapon. If some bad guys come at you while seating behind the desk, you can get up, lift the thing, and swing it around like a samurai sword, instantly decapitating the bad guys.

  3. Prefer the one I’ve just had built. A slab of laminated opaque white glass, with a chrome trim on three sides that blends into the legs. Looks fantastic in my office 🙂

Mind you, that jigsaw pattern is a pretty nice touch.
