“Apple’s Jony Ive and the renowned industrial designer Marc Newson have paired to design a one-off desk,” Aaron Souppouris report for The Verge.
“Created for charity auction, the (RED) Desk is, in keeping with much of the designers’ back catalogues, machined from solid aluminum,” Souppouris report. “The influence of both designers runs through the piece, although it appears there’s a little more Newson in this desk, just as there was a little more Ive in the Leica.”
Souppouris report, “The form is definitely unique; the tabletop sits atop a pair of sculpted legs like a discarded aircraft wing, leading to a striking initial impact. Get closer to the table and a playful jigsaw-like pattern is revealed on the tabletop.”

Uh, fugly…and hardly news worthy, @MDN!
Countdown to more stupid comments such as this….8..7..6..5..
Exactly why Ives said,
“All of us in this room see the same things, the same objects, but Marc and I see what’s behind them.”
Jony… stick to designing ugly tables and leave my iOS alone you TASTELESS JACKASS.
Those with no taste won’t ever understand the difference between decor and design.
Those of us well versed in design know a rip-off of Scandinavian Modern style when we see it.
I am not impressed. A real aircraft wing would be more inspiring.
Jony Ives might be over-rated.
I mean, I get it, I get it: Smooth, clean lines; Rounded edges; No clutter; Clarity and simplicity; Stripped down to its essence, so on and so forth.
This isn’t deep stuff, and that desk is ugly.
One-off?? That thing sucks, more like a 10-off.
And it took two [renowned] designers for that??
Please people, see it, the thing sucks.
Meh
So sit at your Early American roll top desk and feel smug.
It looks like what my dentist puts in my teeth to take x-rays. I’ll stick with my glass and aluminum desk, thanks.
Why does it bother you that someone is not impressed?
beautiful, minimalism.
And 100% recyclable too, if you ever get bored with it.
Recyclable is of course great.
Wood is also recyclable, but also renewable, lower energy in production and uses far fewer chemicals to produce.
I just think people think this is super-green, when there are in my opinion better options.
I get the impression that Jony is letting off steam after completing some Apple projects that we will see presently.
Fine. Everyone should have a hobby. But then LET’S SEE THOSE APPLE PRODUCTS ALREADY.
Since Ive thinks we live in a two dimensional world and that 2-D is the new 3-D in iOS 7, why doesn’t he just draw a picture of table on a piece of paper, charge $1,000 for it and leave it at that.
I’m sure total idiots like Rorschach will be falling over themselves buying it and then finding out that it’s only good for TP.
Is me or does it look a bit like a Magic Mouse with legs?
I say, Go Jony!!
It doesn’t matter what you think of the desk. He is lending his craftsmanship to the betterment of charity. This is a very admirable thing.
Thanks!
“a playful jigsaw-like pattern is revealed on the tabletop.” – No
More like metal crystals. 😛
Jony Ive really should stick to designing computers.
I has handsome lines for sure, but I suspect that, in many rooms, it would be cold to the touch. Fixable with a table cloth I guess, but that would hide its looks.
It looks like it belongs in a morgue.
Gotta love all these wannabe designers. This thing will sell for millions and you’ll all look like idiots.
How would it selling for millions make anyone besides the purchaser look like an idiot?
Heavy Metal!
Too cold and sorely lacking in grace and delight for my ‘own’ taste. There is no ‘I have to have it’ feel or lusting about it when compared to a MacBook Air or a new iMac 27″. I mean, you’d have to pay me to buy it.
Well OK, everyone of us is entitled to our own taste, but you hit your shinbone against that thing when turning around, and it’ll make a man cry. Or you can wield it like a weapon. If some bad guys come at you while seating behind the desk, you can get up, lift the thing, and swing it around like a samurai sword, instantly decapitating the bad guys.
No hanky panky on that desk. It looks like it would fold.
WHAT A RIP-OFF!!!
Choice:
1) The Samsung StupidWatch, currently being ad-bombed on the boob-toob.
2) The Ive & Newton puzzle pattern aluminum desk.
You know which one I want!
The watch, of course!
Prefer the one I’ve just had built. A slab of laminated opaque white glass, with a chrome trim on three sides that blends into the legs. Looks fantastic in my office 🙂
Mind you, that jigsaw pattern is a pretty nice touch.
The sleek unibody design was crafted out of a single block of aluminum….
The Leica, this table and iOs 7’s interface suck.
I’d say get the message and stick with computer hardware.
