“iPhone buyers yearning for a much bigger screen will get their wish next year, at least if a forecast from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek comes true,” Lance Whitney reports for CNET.

“After meeting last week with Apple suppliers in Asia, Misek issued a note to investors on Monday in which he said that the iPhone 6 would offer a 4.8-inch screen,” Whitney reports. “If true, that would be a hefty increase over the 4-inch screen found in the current iPhone lineup.”
“Misek didn’t reveal exactly what triggered his prediction, but he did note that the new screen size would drive a huge number of upgrades,” Whitney reports. “Around 50 percent of smartphones shipped last quarter had screens larger than 4 inches, compared with just 20 percent a year prior.”

Well, at least let’s hope this one is true.
I hope not; iPhone will keep the same screen size, and bigger iPhone will be separate, parallel model. And it most probably it will have 5″ screen, not 4.7″.
Actually, having a choice of larger or smaller would be OK. I’m not interested in a phablet, personally, and think those clowns with the Samdung units look hilarious using them… but that’s just me.
If its the size of a Galaxy S4 unit or smaller than I hope the iPhone 6 has as large a screen as will fit 4.8, 4.9 or 5 inches.
It’s time. My eyes are not getting better, I unapologetically want a bigger screen. I’ve owned an iPhone since month 2 (when I was finally able to get an 2G 8GB).
The Galaxy Note is completely ridiculous looking for the two people I have ever seen using one in the wild. One was a giant guy probably 6’5″ and heavy, yet still the Note looked stupid when he held it to his head.
The s4 looks stupid as well (not quite as stupid as the note) and it requires big pockets (must be designed for the cargo pant set) and is difficult (or impossible) to operate one handed.
You want the iPhone like that so (for a couple years anyway) you won’t have to wear glasses to read your phone?

Munster spoke of an iPhone nano for years. The low-cost iPhone that would turn the smartphone industry on its head. Yeah, glad I didn’t hold my breath for that one.

I just went from a 4S to a 5S. I’m having a hard time using it one handed with a case (I wore the 4S on a lanyard). I can’t use a larger phone, my left hand doesn’t work due to a stroke

This reminds me of a certain Apple troll that predicted the iPhone would fail because phones at that point were (paraphrasing) trending to have more buttons. Well, if everyone else is doing it, Apple should too, right?
I personally do not want the iPhone itself to be much bigger. I want it to easily fit in my pocket. I know people with the larger phones and, with the case, it seems like it is common for them to struggle with this.
I do not hate the idea of a larger screen, but Apple seems to get enough upgrade business with their own innovative approach.
If Apple lets the screen size grow any larger, they’re going to need to revamp iOS so that your thumb isn’t having to reach into all four corners to navigate — it’s getting tough now on the 4″ screen of the 5/5c/5s.
Just like the “Apple needs to release an iPhone nano or it will fail!” cries we heard for the first 3 years after the iPhone was released.
Like an iPhone nano even made sense. People complain already that the keyboard is too small for larger fingers, can you imagine typing on a 2″ screen?
I guess they were planning on having a stylus to go with it . . . .

So, what’s Misek doing with this prediction? FREEZE the current purchasing frenzy through the holiday buying season? Crash the stock’s trading price for a re-buy-in? Hey, where’s the SEC now — oh, yeah, vacation — after that grueling grilling of Apple-tax practices that got no where.
Misek was off 7.9% in his FY2013Q3 predictions, so I will extrapolate that to mean he is really predicting Apple will unveil iPhones with either a 4.4208″ screens or 5.04972″ screens. If the former, “Apple misses on analyst expectations.” If the latter, “Apple makes iPhone too big to be useful.”
In either case, Mr. Misek sells his shorts and makes millions.
I personally hope this is true.
4.5″-4.8″ seems to be the sweet spot.
Once you have used a bigger screen phone, it’s hard to go back.
Apple gets its large screen phone when they enable phone features on iPads (that have cellular). Wireless carriers can provide extra-cost options to existing plans, to allow iPad users to make and receive phone calls.
Right, like Apple has met with its Asian suppliers, put in orders for 4.8″ screens a year in advance, and authorized them to speak to guys like Misek about it.
Whatever.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a 5″ screen on an iPhone. Had a Razr Maxx and legitimately liked the larger screen on it. (And the battery… NOTHING else).
That said I’m a 250 lb 6′ 4″ guy so it felt right for ME specifically.

Has it actually been proven that people with smaller hands prefer displays larger than 4″? There’s one smart thing that Samsung is doing and that is offering several display sizes for its smartphones. Apparently the company can’t be faulted by any analyst saying they don’t have this or that size display. Samsung has totally covered all bases. Apple should at least offer two display sizes and see what consumers actually prefer.
Is Apple really throwing away millions of iPhone sales by not having a larger display? I honestly don’t think so but I could be wrong. I’m sure Apple must have some idea about how much it’s losing in sales from not having an iPhone with a larger display or it’s possible it’s just not ready to integrate larger display iPhones into its supply chain and just willing to accept those losses.
You are correct about covered bases and choice. What would be wrong with Apple offering a choice? And why couldn’t they design a keyboard that leans tughter left or right fornone hand. Again a choice. A preference. I predict every person on this blog will buy the bigger phone. Every single poster. Everyone.
And they’ll love it.
