Netflix updated for Apple ‘s iOS 7 with HD streaming, AirPlay support

“Netflix on Thursday updated its official application for Apple’s iOS, adding high-definition content and AirPlay streaming support for iOS 7 users,” AppleInsider reports.

“The update represents something of a change of strategy for Netflix, as officials for the subscription service said in 2011 that they had no plans to support AirPlay,” AppleInsider reports. “At the time, the company suggested that users simply use its dedicated application found on the Apple TV.”

AppleInsider reports, “The new ‘Super HD’ support in Netflix 5.0 for iOS also comes just a week after the company’s high-definition support landed on Apple TV.”

  1. I’ve been using the “SuperHD” support on my ATV for a couple of days and I have to say – Big whoop. I notice no difference between HD and SuperHD. Well, except 1 – it takes 3x as long to start the SuperHD streams.

I have to agree with Netflix – what’s the point of Airplay from iOS when you already have the Netflix app on ATV. It’s the best Netflix client out there already.

    1. Netflix on your Apple TV is dependent on your home LAN’s Internet connectivity. If your Comcast ISP (et al.) goes down, as it did for me last night, you could switch to your iPhone, run Netflix, and AirPlay to your Apple TV using your cell phone’s LTE connection.

    2. I’m actually glad they now support airplay because I like watching movies in my master bedroom and can send the sound to my in wall speakers via my airport express.
Yes, I know I can just dbl click the home button, but it’s slightly more convenient to select the aiplay device in app.

  2. I just wish there was something to watch on Netflix. It’s quite ridiculous, when you can find the sequel to a movie but not the original. Or you can only find Asylum renditions of movies, and they aren’t even “B” class… I am flustered.

      1. I am also curious how this is possible… to access AirPlay, you need Wifi. All I can think is that the only way this would work is it, while connected to LTE, the Netflix app itself would know to access Wifi when you activate AirPlay and at the same time not turn off LTE. I am at work but will attempt this when I get home.

I just moved into a newly built apartment and Cox ISP has not set up internet access for this address yet.
