Open thread: iPhone lines around the world – send us pics! (with photos)

If you’re in an iPhone line right now, good luck – especially if you’re looking for a Gold iPhone 5s. Those babies are going to be harder to find than, er… gold.

Anyway, where are you (city and state, please)?

How many others are there with you (estimate the best you can)?

Also, how’s your weather? Are you wet or dry? Where are you sleeping or are you planning on sleeping?

Is Woz there with you?

Let us know in the comments below and email us a photo and we’ll post the good ones into this article.

Steven C. is first in line at AT&T Mobility in Dover, Delaware and, so far, the only one in line. If you’re close to this one, you might want to head on over. One caveat: The store confirmed the only color they have for 5S so far is Space Gray, no Silver or Gold, but they do have all three storage sizes in stock:

    1. No Apple shop in Timbuctoo!! I thought that for a city named after Tim Cook they would most certainly have Gold 5’s. Needless to say this intrepid explorer has resorted to an ingenious plan to acquire not one but many iPhones…… I have drawn Apple incs. logo on a card and stuck it on an adobe hut! My plan is to confound a UPS delivery plane to inadvertently drop a consignment here!!!!
3 hours later and still no drop, maybe I ought to place an Apple inc. logo on the roof of the adobe hut?!!

  1. One would think by now that some clever soul would have created a line count app (or something) so everyone anywhere in the country could check their local store line and calculate how much sleep they’re going to get tonight. It’s a noble cause.

  2. I was going to get in line to get one for the wife, but now that she’s seen iOS 7, she wants to stick with iOS 6. She thinks the icons are too childish and doesn’t like the colors (the green, for example is too neon). I don’t particularly mind, so I’m thinking of reverting mine to iOS 6 and then getting the 5S for myself.

Anybody else unhappy about the icons? I’m indifferent.

    1. There are a couple of icons that are a bit bright for my taste (the phone.app icon), and a couple more that just don’t quite look refined (again, the phone.app icon for instance), but overall I think iOS 7 is very nice. I’m confident Apple will revisit and improve these things.

      1. I prefer a darker background with some depth for my folders. The present options all seem to either blend into a light colored home screen image (especially the dynamic images, or look rather flat when set against a darker background.

    2. I’m with you—indifferent; focussed more on other, arguably less consequential things such as utility, functionality and pleasureableness. As opposed to comfortable acquaintability, obdurate conservatism, and fear of the unknown. 🙂

        1. Jim, my father was a man of letters. Not an academic, but self-taught, something like a Faraday or a Lincoln. He instilled in each of his daughters a respect for the magic of words, for their power to alter others’ thinking, and maybe change the world.

The words I use, I learnt from him, and I trot them out as a tribute to him, in a way, whenever a world-changing event summons them. Or, whenever I’m feeling particularly feisty.

        2. I find your postings refreshing on several levels:
          – we need more female viewpoints – I miss Chrissy one
          – your content is well thought out
          – the grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, etc. are first rate.

          Have a great day!

    3. Get a new wife and keep the 5s and its icons. Seriously though, the icons are certainly not a sufficient reason to forego the iOS 7 upgrade. What is she going to do? Wait for iOS 8? Hold her breath until Jony sees the error of his ways and asks for her input? There are too many Google reasons to like iOS 7 to let the icons gets in the way. They work fine for me. You don’t have to sit there and ogle them like they were Marissa on a ball – just tap and go.

    4. Use a dark background (I use a shot I took of a subway wall), and put the offending apps in folders. I only upgraded my iPhone during the beta, and started hating the look of my iPad. It’s funny how it grows on you. I bet your wife switches back to 7 after looking over your (and her friends) shoulders for a while…

  3. Aspen Grove Apple store in Littleton, CO; about 14 people in line. 55 degrees, dry and calm. I’m planning on sleeping at least a couple hours!!! We’re 5th in line! Got here at about 8:15pm. Starting to get a little windy! Nitey-nite! :0)

    1. Ordered 2 gold 7-10 days. Than out of necessity I went to the apple store in Palm Beach Gardens,Fl 6:30 and they handed out vouchers. At 7 am they told me there were no gold iPhones left and the TMobile unlocked which I went to pick up for friend hadn’t even been delivered to the store. Waste of time and boy the Apple employes down here have a serious attitude problem.

  4. Ordered my wife a 32GB Gold at 3:02 tonight. Shipping in 7-10 days, delivered to our home by Oct 8-11. A bit of a wait but well worth it. Alas though, I won’t be able to order a new one for myself until next year. Still love my iPhone 5 though and loving that iOS7.

  5. Wanted to get an unlocked 5s to use on AT&T. But couldn’t figure out if the t-mobile contract free was the same as unlocked. If you look at the order page for the 5c vs the 5s, why does the 5c have a unlocked and contract free option and the 5s only have tmoble contract free?

  6. Turned up at my local Apple store at 6.50. Long line. By 7.40 they’d been down the line allocating stock tickets, and sold out. Ordered on-line. 7-10 days shipping date. Arse.

  7. About 40th in line @ South Park Mall in Charlotte. Already odered two phones at 3:04 a.m. as back-ups. Let’s see if I can scoop fresh ones up at the store. Wanted to try the geeky thing at least once. 🙂
