Engadget reviews Apple iPhone 5c: A breath of fresh air that will be wildly popular this holiday season

“After weeks of leaks and speculation, the iPhone 5c is finally here. Apple’s colorful new lower-cost handset slots below the iPhone 5s flagship and ships with iOS 7,” Myriam Joire writes for Engadget. “The 5c replaces the iPhone 5 in the middle of the lineup, and the 8GB iPhone 4s is now available free on contract. Unlike years past, the iPhone 5 doesn’t carry on as a second-tier device — it’s just gone. The 5c is built from steel-reinforced, colored-through, machined polycarbonate that’s coated in a glossy finish… in a rainbow of pastel hues: white, pink, yellow, blue and green, along with a matching set of cases.”

“Spec-wise, the 5c is basically an iPhone 5 with an improved front-facing camera and global LTE support,” Joire writes. “We’re not going to lie. The iPhone 5c is gorgeous… [it] just triggers some reptilian part of our brains that screams, ‘OMG, color!’ It brings a breath of fresh air to the iPhone lineup and will appeal to consumers at an emotional level. As such, we predict the 5c is going to be wildly popular this holiday season.”

“The surface of the 5c is… like enamel. This, combined with an extremely rigid structure, makes the 5c feel like a solid block of ceramic,” Joire writes. “With the iPhone 5c, Apple’s crafted something that’s more than just the sum of its parts. It’s easy to be cynical and dismiss this handset as just an iPhone 5 in a colorful plastic shell, but that’s missing the point. There’s no doubt that the 5c looks gorgeous and feels wonderful in hand. It inherits tried-and-true features from the iPhone 5 and also gains a few new ones, like that improved 1.2MP front-facing camera. Still, that’s only half the story. It’s iOS 7 that truly sets the 5c (and the iPhone 5s) apart, thanks to a delightful redesign and a dash of new functionality. With the 5c, Apple achieves an unprecedented level of synergy between hardware and software. Like many of the company’s other products, you have to experience the 5c in person to truly appreciate it.”

      1. Yea, the first reviews of Apple products are always knee-jerk pre-written negative reviews posted quickly by people who can’t see beyond the colors or complain that it looks just like the previous model.
The reviews that come out a few days later are the ones that have some thought put into it.

    1. Apple needs to raise average sale price of iPhones, which has dropped since last years significantly. iPhone 5s were just over 50% of all iPhones sold in recent quarters, versus much bigger percentage when iPhone 4S was a flagman phone.

iPhone 5C is cheaper to make but sells for as much as iPhone 5 would if it was still in the making. Plus, additional bright colours might help sales, too.

So basically the only reason why iPhone 5C was released was to make better margins. It was not about expanding sales to new level, alas.

I still think that with iPhone 4S innards and 8GB memory Apple could have easily sell iPhone 5C at as low as $299 — considering that Apple sells iPod touch with 16 GB for the same price with great margins.

So I am not sure the decision Apple has made is strategically correct. At the same time, I am not saying they are wrong, because they obviously have a lot of internal marketing and sales data to base their decisions up on.

  1. Hate your hearts out all Apple haters, this Holiday season will be entirely Apple’s….

New iPhones will sell like hot cakes everywhere, new iPads will sell like pop corn at the movies and new Macs and Apple peripherals will overwhelm consumer electronics sales to jolt the dead brains that sap the human element of joy.

Apple’s numbers the next two quarters will shatter all records yet again and yet again – Guaranteed – iCal it!

If you let idiots write and treat this folly as fact, you are the idiot.
    All others pay cash.

  2. Let’s face the fact. All of these pre-concert reviews before seeing the actual band play came from Wall Stree. How much in the past have those jackasses been correct about anything? In fact, I believe that most of their ?press” is FUD centered because they drive their portfolios off stocks like AAPL. Here is another fact. Steve Jobs crafted 90% of the current executive team at Apple. He is as much an operations genius as Steve Jobs was a visionary genius. All told, and I am a shareholder saying this; I still believe Apple has the best management team in business today. Once sales figures hit in another week, all these Wall Street wizards will look like to second guessing fools they really are.

  3. Really good review.
    As it says:
“With the 5c, Apple achieves an unprecedented level of synergy between hardware and software. Like many of the company’s other products, you have to experience the 5c in person to truly appreciate it.”
