Apple today announced iOS 7, featuring a completely redesigned new user interface, will be available starting Wednesday, September 18 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as a free software update. iOS 7 has hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, enhanced Photos, Safari, Siri and introduces iTunes Radio, a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes. In addition, iOS 7 has been engineered with deep technical and design integration with both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.
“iOS 7 is completely redesigned with an entirely new user interface and over 200 new features, so it’s like getting a brand new device, but one that will still be instantly familiar to our users,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, in a statement. “Next month we’ll be shipping our 700 millionth iOS device, and we’re excited about what our hundreds of thousands of iOS developers are doing to bring great new features to their apps.”
Apple engineered iOS 7 to take full advantage of the advanced 64-bit technologies in iPhone 5s, including the native 64-bit kernel, libraries and drivers. All the built-in apps have been re-engineered for 64-bit, and iOS 7 provides a seamless developer transition with Xcode support and the ability to run both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. iOS 7 also provides deep integration with the new Touch ID sensor and takes full advantage of the new iSight camera sensor to enable new features like automatic image stabilization, Burst Mode and Slo-Mo video with 120 fps. Combined with the new Camera App in iOS 7, iPhone 5s provides up to two-times faster auto-focus, faster photo capture and better dynamic range. iOS 7 is designed to complement the gorgeous exteriors of iPhone 5c, with matching wallpapers and translucency that carry the color through the entire experience.
With more than 200 new features, iOS 7 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch includes:
• Control Center, which gives you quick access to the controls you want in one convenient place with just one swipe from the bottom of your screen
• Notification Center, now available from the Lock screen so you can see all your notifications with a simple swipe, and the new Today feature gives you an at-a-glance view of your day with a summary of the important details such as weather, traffic, meetings and events
• improved Multitasking that gives users the ability to switch between their apps in a more visual and intuitive way, and iOS 7 pays attention to which apps you use most and automatically keeps your content up to date in the background
• AirDrop, an entirely new way to quickly and easily share content with people nearby
• new Camera app filters so you can add real-time photo effects, a square camera option, and you can quickly and easily switch between your four cameras—video, photo, square and panorama—with just a swipe
• a redesigned Photos app that introduces Moments, a new way to automatically organize your photos and videos based on time and location
• full-screen browsing with Safari’s new redesigned user interface, the new smart search field helps simplify searching, and there’s a new view for your bookmarks and your Safari tabs
• Siri with new male and female voices,* Twitter search integration, Wikipedia integration and Bing web searching within the app
• iTunes Radio, a free Internet radio service featuring over 200 stations and an incredible catalog of music from the iTunes Store, combined with features only iTunes can deliver.**
Additional new iOS 7 features include a new Find My iPhone Activation Lock, that requires your Apple ID and password before you can turn off Find My iPhone, erase data or re-activate a device after it’s been remotely erased; FaceTime audio for high quality calls over a data network; and new ringtones, alarms, alerts and system sounds.
iPhone, iPad and iPod touch customers have access to the revolutionary App Store, which offers more than 900,000 apps in 155 countries around the world. iOS 7 now features Popular Apps Near Me, a new way to find apps based on your current location, and iOS 7 will automatically keep your apps up to date. More than 50 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store to date, offering customers an incredible range of apps in 23 categories, including newspapers and magazines in Newsstand, games and entertainment, business, news, sports, health and fitness and travel.
iOS 7 will be available as a free software update starting on Wednesday, September 18 for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and iPod touch (fifth generation). Some features may not be available on all products.
*US English, French and German will be available with the launch of iOS 7. Additional languages will be added over time.
**iTunes Radio will be available with the launch of iOS 7 in the US.

Great! But sadly, I miss the ‘One more thing’ guess that died along with Steve. 🙁
I thought Steve had quit the “one more thing” gimmick several years before he died.

I heard they were doing that over at Samsung… If you really kiss it.
Awful! Is there anything to excite investors?
I wish I could say that it depends on margins on the 5C and how sales go overall.
But sadly, most money in the stock market today is made from stock price manipulation, so I’m afraid AAPL will continue to be a victim.
Is it true, does it look like Android?
Alex. Yes it do look somewhat androidish. Very flat which been the flavor for years on the web. Icons pretty ugly. We will get used to it. But it kind of sucks that the android fan-boys is using the “you copied us” argument. That used to belong to apple:(
i’ll be sticking with the ipod touch
Nice hardware ruined with a Hello Kitty OS. My old college roommate- who is gay- said that iOS is the ‘gayest looking thing he has ever seen’ on an electronic device.
While Apple was underwhelming all but the sheeple, I traded my AT&T iPhone 5 on Gazelle for $325 and purchased a Google Nexus 4 for far less- unlocked and with no contract.
Enjoy your flower power phones.
We will, and thanks for stopping by.
This is Mac Daily News- not iPhone Fanboi News. Still will have an iOS 6 iPad 3rd Generation and Macs ranging from a Mac Mini Server running Snow Leopard to a REAL Mac Pro.
To be honest, I do not see the need for LTE compared to the HSPA+ that AT&T has also rolled out. Having speed tested both in most of the areas I go, the difference is negligible on a smart phone.
I’ll be keeping the LTE 4G Hotspots from Verizon and AT&T for mobile internet for the iPad and emergency backup for Comcast.
And colonialcylon, be sure to get the pinkish one. It goes best with iOS7.
What is going on here? You all hate the new phones and OS? Tell me you are not just teenage fandroids. These phones will sell bigtime. And iOS 7 will blow past kit kat or baby ruth or whatever flavor google is cooking up.
And AAPL always tanks the day of announcements. Grt big assed droids and be happy.
Fanboy
The Nexus 4 is not a huge phone.
Not huge, and not Galaxy Note big (which is just stupid), but still plenty big. I’m a big guy and I cant begin to use the Nexus 4 one-handed. So sorry, but it *does* qualify as a “big-assed droid”.
The “great products in the pipeline” becomes more of a lie every time something “new” is launched. The iOS looks new (and totally sissy) there are a few new features, but the devices that run it aren’t new at all. “Great products in the pipeline” – a bigger and bigger lie that should finally doom the clueless Tim Cook!
Looks tasteless and cheap matching the new OS.
Well done Apple!
Grandfather here, photographer and graphic artist for years, married for 30 happily, I’m fortunate enough to say, and I like the yellow! My wife is going for the green, and our daughter is getting my 5. We’re all happy with the new choices.
I think the 5c is nice, nothing special but that is kind of the point of it isn’t it? A cheaper version that lower income families can afford to have the ios/Apple experience. Personally I think the 5S is sweet and is going to blow us away with performance and polish. It’s going to be tough to pick between the 2 myself. I’ve been in the “buy last years model” cycle when they drop the price, I bought my 4s the day after the price drop. Excellent iphone! I’ll probable sit out the 5s and 5c and upgrade next cycle.
I figured it would be a little upgrade. But was really hoping for a new ipad, live tv streaming device or iwatch. It really sucks that the 5S is a performance boost but nothing more. So it has a fingerprint sensor. I wanted to see a bigger screen or some other real reason to upgrade.
The 5C i was hoping for like a $49 price point. the 4S is free yea but thats a 2 yr old model now.
My 5 runs fast and is allot better then my 4 i replaced it with. To bad i was really hoping for more then just a performance boost.
The 5S is far more than a performance boost. And the difference between $49 and $99 is not much. The bulk of the cost is in the two-year contract anyway.
Apple got blasted last year for releasing a bunch of devices all at once. It was a tactical error that wasted a lot of potential press and consumer excitement and also left a lengthy product drought that opened the door for people to question Apple’s ability to innovate. Things are different this year. The rest of the new products will come in due time and I believe that most people will be very pleased.
I’ll NEVER upgrade my phone to that butt-ugly color scheme that looks as if it was designed for pre-teen girls. I’m a professional and I want an OS that looks like it was designed for a professional.
I bet lots of people (especially men) won’t like it. it might even hurt sales a bit.
What about the wildly colored tiles of Win8ZunirTunesMetro OS on MSNokia phones? Kindergarten OS from the decaying giant in Redmond WA.
Why isn’t there a slider in iOS7 to switch between new design / old design (or between ugly / beautiful). For me it looks like the Apple-Vista, or better the Fisher-Price Laugh’n Learn Phone(http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4460033)
what bothers you (besides the ugly icons)?
o.K., once again (pardon, I repeated this so many times against the YES-Massa-type-of-users):
– the icon design is boring
– the icon-color is mostly kiddish
– the fonts (e.g. in mail) are too thin
– transparency – or, as Jony Ive called it – the translucency reduces contrast (see Win-Vista or Win7)
– there is no need for 3D or moving effects
– the calculator has no memory keys anymore
… and some more
to FM: please delete this posting, it was gone before I could review it. THX
O.k., once again (pardon me, I’ve been repeating this for so many times against the bunch of Yes-Massa type of users):
– the icon design is boring and not congruent
– the icon colors are kiddish
– transparency – or, as Jony Ive called it – translucency kills contrast and readability
– the fonts are too thin (e.g. in Mail)
– the calculator lost its memory keys
– 3D or moving effects are useless and distracting
– missing “buttons” make it difficult to find the function
and so on
