“You meet the nicest people on CNBC. Take, for example, Jeffrey Gundlach,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt writes for Fortune. “‘I just wonder how many people will queue up around the block for an iPad 87,”‘ he said. “That was in May 2012, when Apple was trading for just over $540 a share. The next day the stock began a run that took it to over $700.”

P.E.D. reports, “Gundlach was at it again Thursday, telling CNBC listeners that Apple ‘is a dead-money stock for quite a while to come, once it settles in around $530.’ For those with short memories, Gundlach was the so-called bond king of Wall Street profiled in Fortune after he was fired by his long-time employer, Trust Company of the West, and sued for allegedly stealing proprietary data to start a competing firm. ‘The suit added a salacious twist of the knife, perfectly calibrated for maximum media interest,’ Fortune reported. ‘Gundlach had allegedly stashed a trove of illicit material in his office: 70 pornographic magazines and videos, 12 ‘sexual devices,’ and several bags of marijuana.’ — From Firing the $70 billion man.”

      I’m not commenting on the MORALITY of porn, I’m stating that he’s using PAPER magazines and tape or DVD videos. That’s low stone age tech and leaving all the stuff in his OFFICE for people to stumble over. If you want to do PORN or other stuff there’s better higher tech alternatives: like secure web browsing, locked HDs etc.

      He’s obviously not into tech and he’s commenting on the viability of apple.

  4. There is nothing illicit in porn, it is perfectly moral and healthy thing to enjoy, and it has nothing to do with whether Gundlach guy is otherwise bad or incompetent or whatever.

        3. I saw a lot of bogus anecdotal stuff in there – far too much to provide any confidence that it is a legitimate source of scientific data. The word ‘science’ has been corrupted and twisted by the far right. Theories are cast into doubt because there is no ‘certainty.’ Certainty is provided where there is no evidence. Pseudo-science is presented as ‘providing a valid counterpoint’ to well-supported and generally accepted scientific knowledge.And questioning anything that does not support a specific viewpoint is akin to heresy.

          I consider myself an independent. I vote for the best candidate, which is often a case of voting for the lesser of two evils. There are policy positions with which I disagree from both parties. But I absolutely cannot abide the irrational denigration of science or the injection of religion into science. That is an absolute deal-breaker.

        4. I’ve got three science degrees. I’m no genius, but it astounds me how far science has fallen in general during my lifetime. Watching the PBS ‘Nova’ program is torture for me because it is consistently riddled with wrong information and bad science. Last month I was reading through an Ars Technica article that was discussing microwaves and referred to them as ‘light’. I kindly provided corrected information and was FLAMED by ars trolls who VEHEMENTLY insisted upon using the WRONG terminology, including the author of the article! WTF?! It’s like my nation has turned deliberately, insistently ignorant. Not a good thing.

        5. I was surprised by the ars technica response to your concern regarding the use of the general term ‘light’ to refer to non-visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A forum such as ars should be more selective in its use of technical language.

          I once wrote an email to a science teacher who responded similarly to my concern about measuring ‘weight’ in a microgravity environment. The question was clearly flawed, as you cannot directly measure weight under such conditions. You could infer weight under an arbitrary gravity environment by first calculating mass. That could be done, for instance, by imparting a known impulse and measuring change in velocity, then backing out mass. But the best that the teacher could do is to say that her students would not understand the difference, that it would confuse them. She then proceeded to admit that she was not clear on the concepts involved. It was a very sad moment and helps to explain why adults are often clueless about scientific concepts and can be so easily swayed by confidently presented pseudo-science.

          Then I can throw in this concept: Matter is a ‘matter’ of perception. We say that only matter has weight. And yet this is quite wrong. All energy has an attractive quality. We can prove this by the simple observation of black holes whereby electromagnetic energy is attracted to it and caught in it. This the ‘black’ of black holes. It takes particularly high energy electromagnetic energy to escape a black hole, therefore the observed x-ray omissions of quasars.

          Therefore, actual ‘gravity’ at any one point in space is a, ahem, ‘matter’ of taking into account ALL the energy present at that point and its effects on that point. This of course is difficult as much of that energy is in motion or is expressing itself as a field. We stick to using matter mass only because that’s typically more stationary and less transient.

          IOW: It’s a far busier universe, far more energy populated universe around us than we perceive as humans, more than even our wonderful machines can perceive, more than our extremely basic concepts of ‘dark matter’ and ‘dark energy’ can explain. I.E., the more we look for complexity, the more we find. I personally am looking forward to we humans getting a handle on universal complexity and the ramifications it will have upon how we think and express ourselves.

          In my fiction, this is one of the reasons I write. I love the confrontation of the inexplicable and our limited human minds. Many of the old Outer Limits TV programs explored such confrontations. Scary and wonderful stuff.

        7. No, it doesn’t look familiar. Why should it? This site is about porn addiction, which existed long before the Internet and will continue to exist as long as human beings have genitalia and the associated hormones that drive them. I do not dispute that porn addiction exists. Nor do I dispute that the Internet makes it easier to feed such an addiction. It is like distributing full liquor bottles to drunks.

          But the point is the DeRS made a valid statement and Wil countered with an argument and a website targeted to a subset of people with a problem. Unless Gundlach is one of those people, it doesn’t apply. And even if Gundlach turns out to be one of those afflicted, it doesn’t necessarily apply to most other people.

          One of the problems with America is that it was invaded by groups of highly prudish people who felt driven to deny almost everything that felt natural and good about being human. When it was convenient, certain other people’s were classified as less than human to justify bypassing those rules for convenience, power, and profit. We are still dealing with the aftermath of those belief systems. I, for one, will be overjoyed when it is generally recognized that morality can and does exist even in the absence of spirituality.

        We don’t hear much from you when Apple is up. Then it takes a little dip because of general market malaise and you pop up again with your anti-Cook bullshit. If you don’t get paid for posting that drivel, then you are an idiot for wasting your time with it.

        By the way, prepare for a period of prolonged silence starting in September. Because Apple’s first quarter of the new fiscal year is going to be a very nice one. And you are going to look increasingly stupid (if such an increase is actually possible).

        1. Excitement over “new” stuff in the weeks ahead will be good for a few days then when the reality that what we got was a lot of hype over some tweaks and pastel icons, it will quickly fade. AAPL is a $400 stock going nowhere until there’s some hope that even a little of the old magic can be rekindled. Cook can’t make that happen – everyone knows that – even your dog. I don’t have a dog.

        2. Actually, AAPL is a $487 stock (over 20% higher than you state) with exceptionally strong financials and several very strong product lines. Besides, AAPL pays a fine dividend as it currently stands. And it’s P/E is so ridiculously low in comparison to some other tech stocks that it greatly limits its downside. Did I mention the many $B that Apple has in cash and securities? Go ahead and buy whatever stock that you want. But your voodoo scare tactics and illogic won’t gain you any followers here. Besides, the smart money got in on AAPL early and would have strong gains even if AAPL dropped to $200 per share.

          By the way, please leave the dog alone. He has it under control.

    3. The entire market moved down this week. The prospect of World War 3 tends to bring fear in people including investors. But not that you would have noticed, Jay, you clown shoes buffoon. Thousands of Syrians killed by their government this month, many with nerve toxins, convulsing in online videos as they perished, all those American politicians insisting that something has to be done about it, and you think stocks are down because of Apple’s CEO. I hope you wise up soon because there’s way, way, too many ignorant bastards in this world.

  8. Wall St. manipulators have never understood Apple. It took them a huge amount of time to comprehend why the $12 to $1400 rally occurred (there was a 2:1 stock split), when most people interested in tech could explain it in a single sentence.
