Microsoft slashes price of its moribund Surface RT tablet

“Microsoft is planning to cut the price of its Surface RT tablets,” Tom Warren reports for The Verge.

“Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Surface plans have revealed to The Verge that the price cut could occur as early as next week, with each model being cut by $150,” Warren reports. “Microsoft’s move to cut prices on its Surface RT tablets follow slow sales, and efforts to sell the devices elsewhere at lower rates.”

Warren reports, “Staples has confirmed the price cut in a listing in its weekly promotional ads. The price cut comes into effect on Sunday July 14th.”

Juli Clover reports for MacRumors, “Microsoft has heavily marketed Windows 8 tablets in recent weeks, pitting several different tablets against Apple’s iPad in a series of ads… Despite the pricing cuts, Microsoft has suggested that new versions of both the Surface Pro and the Surface RT are in the works, along with a number of new accessories.”

  1. It’s the same old story for any tablet that tries to go head-to-head with iPad. Price cuts and eventual fire sale. And once the price goes low enough, those Surface tablets will get sold (at a loss), and Microsoft will claim success. We have a sellout!

Amazon gets it. Don’t try to compete directly with iPad. Go where Apple will not go, low quality and cheap. Kindle Fire sells at a loss at fire sale prices, BY DESIGN!

    1. Kindles don’t sell at a loss, they just sell at no profit.

They profit by jamming ads in your face, stealing data. And selling you useless amazon services.

Very good way to get money from the poor who can’t afford an iPad

      1. Something that is supposedly calculated to sell at exactly “no profit” is bound to be selling at a loss, in the real world, if you count the cost of returns (and other unpredictable expenses).

  2. Lol. At a glance I thought it said they’d cut the price TO $150. I thought, “That’s cheap! Would I want one for that?” Then, “Nope.”

Then I saw it’s only a $150 cut. Good luck with that.

    1. Yes, it would still flop.

Every version of windows Is stolen, not secure, buggy, slow, and full of crap
      Office is dead man walking
Xbox 1 was a PC in a box, with stolen Mac games like halo
Xbox 360s break all the time
Windows 7 and 8 phones are ripped from iOS and not made well,

Literally everything Microsoft has ever produced is crap and inferior to apple

  3. Microsoft Surface RT is a great tool. Since I started using it I offloaded the lethargic iPad to a relative. Those who are attacking the Surface either they did not use it or just bandwagon slammers who would condemn Microsoft even for a charity work..
